A tragic incident unfolded at Crescent Bay Cove in Laguna Beach, California, where a 41-year-old local man lost his life after being pulled unconscious from the water. The victim has been identified as Justin Anand Shahani, who was among two bodysurfers caught in treacherous conditions on Wednesday, August 26.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 4 p.m. local time when witnesses observed the two men struggling in the surf. Lifeguards quickly responded to the calls for help, diving into the tumultuous waters to perform rescues. While one of the bodysurfers managed to escape the perilous situation, Shahani was not as fortunate.
After lifeguards reached Shahani, they discovered that he was unconscious and in need of urgent medical attention. Capt. Dane Doran of the Laguna Beach Marine Safety confirmed that immediate CPR was administered as soon as he was pulled from the water. Despite these efforts, Shahani had suffered cardiac arrest, and emergency responders struggled to revive him.

He was subsequently transported to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach for further medical treatment. Unfortunately, the lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and Shahani was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community as friends and family come to terms with their loss.
Witnesses present at the beach during the rescue described the challenging conditions of the surf that day. Eric Zueger, who recorded the chaotic moments, noted how the waves made visibility difficult. “When the waves start to billow, you can’t see anything,” he explained, highlighting the obscured view beneath the surface, which complicated the potential for escape for those in the water.
Zueger also pointed out that the bodysurfers entered the water around the time when larger waves seemed to have settled, creating a false sense of safety. “It looked like the larger waves had subsided,” he remarked, indicating that the ocean can be deceptively dangerous.
As the authorities look into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County Coroner’s Office have not yet issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigation.
This incident raises important questions about ocean safety and the risks associated with bodysurfing in changing surf conditions. Local lifeguards advise beachgoers to remain vigilant and heed warnings related to surf conditions, particularly during unpredictable wave patterns.
The loss of Justin Anand Shahani is a poignant reminder of the untamed power of the ocean and the potential dangers of water activities. As the community mourns, tributes and condolences have begun to emerge from those who knew Shahani, reflecting on his life and character.
In the wake of this tragedy, it is crucial for individuals engaging in water sports to be aware of the risks and to always prioritise safety.
