Chase Stokes, the actor renowned for his role as John B. in Netflix’s hit series *Outer Banks*, has opened up about the injuries he sustained while filming. In a recent interview, Stokes disclosed that he suffered multiple concussions and a dislocated shoulder, which have significantly impacted his day-to-day life and work.

The 33-year-old actor shared that he experienced a total of three concussions during his time on set. Alongside these head injuries, he has also faced various other physical challenges, including dislocating a finger and requiring stitches from accidents on set. Reflecting on his experience, Stokes expressed how deeply invested he has been in the show, stating, “This is a show that I’ve quite literally poured my blood, sweat, and tears into over the years.”

However, the repercussions of these injuries have extended beyond physical pain. Stokes revealed that the concussions have led to troubling symptoms, primarily affecting his memory. He described moments of forgetfulness, stating, “I’ve had days where I’ve looked at my materials the night before, and I’m feeling pretty good about it, but then I’ll get in the car and go to work, and I’ll be like, ‘S—, I don’t remember the chunk of dialogue from last night.'”
This short-term memory loss has raised concerns for Stokes, making it difficult for him to recall lines or information he had only been exposed to recently. He candidly shared that it’s a “scary” experience, which has prompted him to prioritise recovery over the high-octane stunts typically required in his role.
In a bid to heal and combat these lingering effects, Stokes has undertaken transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, a non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate nerve cells in the brain using magnetic pulses. He reported that this therapy has “helped tremendously” in his recovery journey and his focus has shifted towards “remapping and focusing on neuroplasticity in my brain.”
As a result of his injuries, Stokes has decided to reduce his involvement in stunt work. With *Outer Banks* concluding after five successful seasons, he expressed contentment in letting his stunt double, Levi Gilbert, take over strenuous action scenes. “He’s become a dear friend of mine. I’d much rather tag him in and let him do his job to make those characters look way cooler than I ever could,” Stokes remarked, acknowledging the importance of knowing when to step back for one’s health.
Stokes’ commitment to his physical and mental well-being aligns with his desire to continue his career without further jeopardising his health. His upcoming project, *Thunder Road*, will see him take on the role of a troublemaking aspirant pro-racer, which may offer new dynamics away from the physical intensity of his previous work on *Outer Banks*.
Through his experiences, Stokes illustrates the importance of prioritising health and well-being in a high-stakes industry. As he navigates the challenges posed by his injuries, Stokes remains focused on fully healing, which he hopes will allow him to continue pursuing his passion for acting while safeguarding his future.
Fans of the actor and the series will undoubtedly be cheering him on as he embarks on this new chapter, one that seeks a balance between creativity and wellness. His candid revelations not only provide insight into the rigours of acting but also highlight the broader need for discussions around health, recovery, and the realities faced by performers in the industry.
