Missing 27-Year-Old Hiker Survived 10 Days in Wilderness After Trails Were ‘Difficult to Traverse’

A 27-year-old hiker from Washington state, Chad T. Pietrok, has been found alive after going missing for ten days in the wilderness. His rescue was made possible thanks to the keen observation of another hiker on the Jack Creek Trail, who recognised him from missing person reports.

Pietrok was last seen on August 11 at the Ingalls Creek Trailhead near Leavenworth, Washington. According to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, he had planned to hike a route that included Ingalls Creek, Esmerelda Basin, Venn Epps, Jack Creek, and Eight Mile Trails. At the time of his disappearance, he was reported to be wearing either a yellow or orange outer layer, possibly carrying a blue backpack, and had a yellow or grey tent with him.

After his absence was noted, the local authorities initiated a search and rescue operation that lasted over a week. Search crews worked diligently across Chelan and Kittitas counties, utilising ground teams, helicopters, drones, and even K9 units to scour the potentially vast areas where Pietrok could have gone off course. The turning point in the search came when a fellow hiker recognised Pietrok as the individual who had been reported missing. According to reports from CBS affiliate KIRO, this hiker offered Pietrok a ride back to his vehicle, which led to a text being sent to 911 dispatch informing them of Pietrok’s location near the Jack Creek Trailhead.

Upon meeting with deputies, Pietrok recounted that the journey had taken him longer than he had expected. He explained that he had encountered several challenging trail conditions. Fortunately, despite the ordeal, Pietrok was found uninjured, which was a fortunate outcome given the duration of his time in the wilderness.

More than 70 individuals, including volunteers and professionals, contributed to the search efforts over the course of ten days.
