Brandon Leake, the acclaimed winner of America’s Got Talent, has recently opened up about the challenges he and his family have faced since his daughter Aaliyah was diagnosed with juvenile dermatomyositis, an incurable autoimmune condition that affects her muscles. At just six years old, Aaliyah’s struggle has not only transformed their family dynamic but also inspired Leake’s latest artistic endeavour.

In a candid conversation, Leake recalled the heart-wrenching moment when they received the diagnosis. “Aaliyah lost her ability to walk for an extended period,” he shared during a poetry workshop in Miami. This condition, which specifically targets large muscular groups, significantly altered their lives, prompting Leake to reassess his priorities and step away from touring to focus on his family.
The situation was compounded by financial difficulties as they dealt with escalating medical bills. “When it rains, it pours,” he lamented, reflecting on the stress of losing a substantial work contract during this turbulent time. The family also faced the ordeal of relocating due to black mould in their home, which exacerbated Aaliyah’s health issues, and discovering lead in their water supply necessitated urgent replacements of their plumbing.
Leake’s life has always been marked by adversity; he lost his sister at a young age, a loss that has deeply influenced his artistic voice. This pain was conveyed in a poignant poem during his AGT audition in 2020, propelling him into the spotlight. He recalls a moment of reflection, stating, “If my mum could survive losing a daughter at 24, I knew I could cope with my daughter’s life just being different at 31.”
Today, there is a ray of hope for Aaliyah, who is steadily improving following treatment and support. “She is running, riding bikes, and even getting back into gymnastics,” Leake reported enthusiastically, demonstrating his daughter’s resilience.
Despite the numerous challenges, Leake and his wife, Anna, welcomed their third child, Kai, during this tumultuous period. This addition brought joy amid the hardships, as Leake stated, “Despite all of the difficulties… God has been really good to me.” His growing family has become a source of strength, nurturing an environment of support and love.
This blend of pain, gratitude, and faith has become the foundation of his upcoming album titled Intimacy. Leake has channelled his family’s experiences into his work, writing a powerful piece called “Fear,” capturing the emotions surrounding Aaliyah’s diagnosis. “It took a lot of time, tears, and honesty to craft that poem,” he recalled, acknowledging the therapeutic yet challenging process of sharing such personal experiences.
Before revealing this poem to the world, Leake sought permission from Aaliyah. He discussed the importance of her consent openly, saying, “You owe our daughter the opportunity to say no if she doesn’t want her story told.” With her approval, expressed through her playful concern about attending the performance, Aaliyah showed her understanding and resilience at such a young age.
Leake emphasised the integral role of his wife throughout this journey, highlighting that their relationship has been a bedrock of support. “Marriages don’t survive these types of issues unless you decide to lean on each other,” he observed, stressing that they made a conscious choice to turn towards one another and seek solace in their faith during this trying time.
