The analysis followed individuals who participated in significant health studies in 1976 and 1986, tracking their dietary habits and lifestyle changes over several decades. During this period, 278 participants were diagnosed with stomach cancer. Notably, those who consumed at least one sugary beverage each day were found to possess a nearly 2.5 times greater risk of developing the disease than those who limited their intake to less than one drink per month.

Senior study author Dr. Andrew T. Chan, a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist from the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, emphasized the importance of these findings. The study found that sugar-free beverages and those sweetened with artificial ingredients were not associated with increased risks of stomach cancer.
