In a candid conversation with *PEOPLE*, reality TV star Jen Affleck has reflected on a challenging year, marked by personal struggles and significant changes in her life. The star of *The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives* shared insights about her marriage, her pregnancy journey, and her recent move to California for the upcoming spinoff series *The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Orange County*.

Jen, 27, recently relocated with her husband, Zac Affleck, and their three children—Nora, four, Luca, three, and Penelope, one—moving from their home in Utah. As production on the show’s inaugural season wraps up, Jen admitted that the transition had not been an easy one. “It’s been a lot the past couple of months, I’ll be honest,” she revealed. Despite the difficulties, she expressed a sense of optimism. “I do feel like I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and just trying to count my blessings every single day,” she added.
Adding to the complexity of her year, Jen discovered she was pregnant with her fourth child shortly after the family’s move. Celebrating the news with a beautiful maternity photoshoot, she showcased her baby bump in a flowing yellow halter-neck dress. However, the positive news came with its own set of challenges, particularly within her first trimester.
Not long after arriving in Orange County, Jen encountered a health scare in the form of an infected wisdom tooth. The reality star described the ordeal: “I have to go into surgery; I can’t go under, I can’t take the meds because I’m nauseous and throwing up. I mean, I was just going through it.”
In addition to her physical ailments, Jen opened up about experiencing prenatal depression during this period. In a heartfelt post shared on Instagram, she candidly admitted that her mind ventured into “some really dark places” during her first trimester, an experience that left her feeling frightened and vulnerable.
Reflecting on the importance of sharing her struggles, Jen stated, “I definitely feel like everything that I’m experiencing right now is for a reason, and I do believe that it’s supposed to help people.” While she acknowledges that her specific circumstances—being a young mother of four within the Mormon community—may not resonate with everyone, she believes there are universal aspects of her journey that can connect with a wider audience. “As long as one person is benefiting from me sharing my story, that’s all that matters to me,” she expressed.
Throughout her first trimester, Jen relied heavily on her husband Zac, who stepped up to care for their three children while she grappled with severe illness. “I could not be there for my kids, and so Zac really had to show up,” she said, emphasizing his unwavering support during that difficult time. “I mean, he didn’t really have a choice.”
The couple, who wed in 2019, have faced their share of challenges, many of which were publicised during the first season of *Mormon Wives* in 2024. Despite their past struggles, Jen indicated that they have been working diligently on their relationship as they navigate this new chapter together. “There’s a lot that we’ve been navigating behind closed doors,” she shared, adding, “I wouldn’t have survived the first trimester without him.”
As Jen affirms her commitment to transparency regarding her experiences, she remains dedicated to conveying a message of resilience and hope. With her eyes set on the future of both her family and her career, she continues to embrace the ups and downs of life, determined to transform her challenges into growth opportunities.
In a world where personal stories can inspire and uplift others, Jen Affleck’s openness not only sheds light on the realities of motherhood but also highlights the strength found in vulnerability. As she continues her journey of motherhood and reinvigorated career path, many will undoubtedly be watching to see how her story unfolds.
