Ritchie Blackmore Says ‘Emotional’ Reunion with Deep Purple After 33 Years ‘Could Be the Last Time We See Each Other’

Legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has reunited with the iconic British rock band Deep Purple for a poignant performance of their classic hit “Smoke on the Water”. This special reunion, which took place on August 12 in Wantagh, New York, marked the first time the musicians have performed together since Blackmore’s departure from the band in 1993.

At 81 years old, Blackmore expressed his gratitude for the emotional experience of rejoining the group he co-founded over five decades ago. Reflecting on the moment, he noted, “It was very moving because I went on very quickly and had to play immediately. I couldn’t warm up, but I wasn’t there to be playing correct notes. I was there to see old friends I hadn’t seen in 40 years.” This sentiment underscores the significance of the reunion, underlined by the passage of time and the realisation that such occasions may be limited.

The guitarist, renowned for his innovative work with Deep Purple, initially left the band in 1975 to launch Rainbow, only to return from 1984 until his final exit a decade later. His departure was contentious, with previous remarks describing tensions with frontman Ian Gillan as stemming from their “alpha” personalities clashing. However, Blackmore has since acknowledged that the dynamics have shifted.

In a conversation with Guitar Player, he conveyed a sense of maturity and reconciliation, noting, “But all that [has] changed. I was there to heal any wounds — but there weren’t any wounds.” He likened the reunion to soldiers returning home after a long deployment, emphasising the emotional gravity of the reunion with his former bandmates Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian Paice.

For the nostalgic performance, Blackmore chose to play a Fender Stratocaster, a beloved instrument from his past, despite feeling somewhat apprehensive about returning to the stage after a four-year hiatus from rock performances. Although he lost his place briefly during the song, he remained unfazed, stating that the reunion was about the camaraderie rather than musical perfection.

Blackmore recounted his decision to join the band for the performance, explaining that it was inspired by his desire to reassure fans of the band’s unity. He said, “I woke up one morning thinking, the day before their show, ‘You know it would be good for the fans if I just got up for one song, probably ‘Smoke,’ and just show that we’re not at each other’s throats and don’t hate each other.’” Gillan responded positively to Blackmore’s suggestion, which led to an enthusiastic approval from the rest of the band.

Following the performance, Gillan took to social media to express his appreciation for Blackmore’s participation, describing it as “a pleasure” and recognising its significance for fans and for himself. He remarked, “Thanks Ritchie, that meant a lot to many people; not least me,” reflecting a long-awaited resolution between the two rock icons.

Deep Purple is currently engaged in a worldwide tour promoting their latest studio album, entitled “Splat!”, which was released in July. The reunion with Blackmore adds a nostalgic touch to their performances, undoubtedly enhancing the overall experience for fans of the legendary band.
