According to the Gainesville Police Department, Krauss was crossing West University Avenue when a vehicle, attempting to swerve to avoid another car, collided with her before subsequently hitting the other vehicle. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation, and no charges have been filed against those involved at this time.

Porchia Hardy, a nurse who happened to be passing by, immediately rushed to assist Krauss after witnessing the accident. Speaking to ABC affiliate WCJB, she expressed her desire for Krauss’s family to know that their loved one was not alone during her final moments. “I want them to know that she wasn’t alone and there were people there that cared for her,” Hardy stated, reflecting on her instincts kicking in as she approached the victim.
Hardy described the frantic scene, stating, “I put the car in park. I told my husband to turn the flashers on. Then I got out of the car and ran over to where she was at, trying to offer whatever help that I could.” Despite her efforts, Krauss was transported to a nearby hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.
The response from the university community has been profound following this tragic event. Krauss was a freshman at the University of Florida, majoring in business. A spokesperson for the university conveyed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with Hazel’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” underlining the shock felt by the academic community.
Krauss was a recent graduate of Saint Ignatius College Prep, where she had made a lasting impression. In a public tribute, the school expressed their heartbreak, saying, “We hold the Krauss family in our hearts as they process the unimaginable loss of their beloved daughter, sister, niece, and granddaughter.” The institution paid homage to her character, noting, “Hazel reflected the very best of what we hope to see in our graduates: a willingness to grow, intellectual curiosity, faith, love for others, and a sincere commitment to justice.”
The statement from Saint Ignatius College Prep highlighted the vibrant spirit Krauss brought to her academic and extracurricular pursuits, emphasising the joy she found in learning, her sporting activities, and community service. “She made a lasting mark on her classmates and all who knew her… Hazel truly embodied the spirit of Saint Ignatius, and our community will miss her dearly,” the school added.
As the investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, there is a strong outpouring of grief and support for Krauss’s family. Many have taken to social media to share memories and express their sorrow at the loss of a young life filled with promise.
Hazel Krauss’s untimely death serves as a solemn reminder of the vulnerabilities present in everyday situations, such as crossing the road. In light of this incident, both the Gainesville community and the broader university environment are reflecting on road safety and the importance of looking out for one another.
As the community mourns, support networks are rallying to provide assistance to those impacted by this tragedy. Local residents and students alike are encouraged to come together in remembrance of Krauss, celebrating her life and the positive influence she had on those around her.
