Former Police Chief Rushes in to Restrain Unruly Passenger Who Allegedly ‘Lunged’ at Crew Members Mid-Flight

In a recent incident aboard a United Airlines flight, former Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara intervened to help restrain an unruly passenger known to have become aggressive mid-flight. The altercation occurred on 5 August 2023, as the aircraft, Flight 1364, was en route from Newark, New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

O’Hara, who was travelling with his wife, witnessed the disruptive behaviour of a fellow passenger, identified later as Daniel Borman, 36, from Springfield, New Jersey. According to O’Hara, Borman repeatedly berated flight attendants and exhibited erratic behaviour during the flight. The situation escalated when the cabin crew refused to serve him additional alcohol, triggering a tirade of shouting and threatening remarks towards both the crew and other passengers.

“Flight attendants did everything they could, showing remarkable professionalism as they attempted to calm the situation for about 45 minutes,” O’Hara noted in an interview. “It was infuriating to hear such abusive language directed at individuals who were simply trying to ensure the safety of everyone on board.”

Things took a turn for the worse when Borman allegedly lunged towards the flight attendants. This prompted O’Hara and two other passengers, who later turned out to be off-duty members of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, to step in. Together, they managed to restrain Borman using plastic flex cuffs until the plane landed safely at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The united effort of these individuals gained recognition after a United Airlines spokesperson confirmed that local law enforcement was waiting for the flight’s arrival to address the situation. O’Hara expressed gratitude for the calmness and efficiency of the flight crew throughout the ordeal.

Once the flight arrived, Borman was escorted off the aircraft by authorities. An initial police report indicated that he exhibited glassy, watery eyes and emitted a strong smell of alcohol. Witnesses reported that as he was led away, Borman shouted, “I f—ing did nothing wrong,” in a public area just outside the airport.

Borman was subsequently charged with disorderly public intoxication and taken to Broward County’s main jail, where he posted a $150 bond the following day. He is no longer listed in the county’s inmate records.

O’Hara’s wife, Wafiyyah, who serves as a lieutenant with the Newark Police Department, later shared a video of the incident on social media. She praised her husband for his quick actions, emphasising the importance of leadership in emergencies. “Proud of my husband today,” she wrote in her Facebook post. “Leadership isn’t just about the job you hold; it’s about being willing to help when others need it.”

This incident highlights the potential dangers that can arise in confined spaces like airplanes, especially when alcohol is involved. Flight crews face the challenging task of managing onboard behaviour while ensuring passenger safety and comfort.
