College Football Player, 18, Fatally Stabbed in Altercation Near Rhode Island Nightclub, Just Weeks After Starting School

A tragic incident unfolded in Rhode Island this past weekend, leaving a community shattered by the loss of an aspiring college football player. Marvin Antoine, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, succumbed to fatal injuries following a stabbing that occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday, September 19.

Reports indicate that the altercation began while Antoine, along with his teammates, was waiting in line at a local nightclub, Mezzo Lounge, just hours after their football team had faced defeat against Framingham State. According to Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez, the incident escalated into violence, ultimately leading to the stabbing in the parking lot of a nearby Wendy’s.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find Antoine with a severe stab wound to the chest. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Antoine’s teammate, 19-year-old Kensley Macean, suffered injuries to his head, neck, and left arm, but fortunately, these wounds were classified as non-life-threatening. Macean is currently recovering in hospital.

Following a quick investigation, police identified 19-year-old Chukuwnonso Uzoma-eze as the prime suspect in the attack. He has since been charged with murder and was apprehended shortly after the incident. Chief Perez emphasised the gravity of the situation, expressing deep sympathy for Antoine’s family, who had only recently moved him into college life.

In a statement addressing the tragedy, UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller extended condolences to Antoine’s family, friends, and teammates, highlighting the collective grief felt across the campus. He also expressed his hopes for Macean’s swift recovery, recognising the emotional toll the incident has taken on the student body.

Antoine’s younger sister, Stacie, has taken to social media to share her heartbreak, creating a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral expenses. On the platform, she reflected on her brother’s character, describing him as smart, easygoing, and a source of laughter for those around him. “He was the kind of person who was always there for the people he loved,” she wrote, struggling to comprehend the loss. “I feel empty after losing my older brother.”

The police announced that the confrontation that led to the stabbing appeared to have stemmed from an argument involving a female patron at the nightclub. Chief Perez mentioned that initial reports indicated the club was overcrowded at the time, and the friction eventually moved to the Wendy’s parking lot, where the fatal altercation occurred. He noted that there was no evidence to suggest that the individuals involved were previously acquainted.

Community members and fellow students are coming together to mourn the loss of Antoine, who had just embarked on his journey into higher education and athletics.
