The Austin Police Department has recently released body-camera footage involving a tragic incident where a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot by police in the early hours of 24 July. The officers responded to a 911 call reporting an armed suspect, only to find themselves involved in a situation that quickly escalated.

The police were alerted around 3:51 a.m. to the presence of a teenager believed to be carrying a gun near a local park on Baden Lane. According to statements from the police chief, Lisa Davis, the caller described a young man who appeared to have a handgun in his waistband and was reportedly displaying it.
In the recorded 911 call, the individual on the line voiced uncertainty but indicated that the teen was fiddling with his waistband. “There seems to be a kid, and it looks like he has a gun. I see something in his hands, it looked like a firearm, but I’m not sure,” the caller stated, highlighting the confusion surrounding the situation.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers identified a youth who matched the description given by the caller. In an effort to avoid conflict, they instructed the young man to keep his hands visible. The situation took a tragic turn when, according to Chief Davis, the boy suddenly lifted his sweatshirt and reached into his waistband with one hand, prompting the officers to react.
In footage released by the police, the moment the teenager reached for his waistband is captured, leading to the officers discharging their firearms. The incident unfolded rapidly, and by 4:25 a.m., the teen was declared dead at the scene.
Following the incident, police investigations revealed that the 911 call had been made from the boy’s own phone. It is believed that he was the person who reported the armed individual. This information has led authorities to consider the possibility that the shooting could be categorised as “suicide by police,” a term used when an individual deliberately engages law enforcement in a manner that provokes a deadly response.
The object the teen was reaching for, as confirmed by subsequent investigations, was not a firearm but a water bottle.
