In a heartwarming tale of resilience, a senior beagle named Marshmallow has found a new home after being rescued from Ridglan Farms, a dog breeding and research facility located in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Marshmallow was one of 1,500 beagles recently removed from the facility, following a collaborative agreement between Ridglan Farms and two animal welfare organisations: Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Centre for a Humane Economy.

These two groups acquired the dogs earlier this year and launched a massive effort to care for the neglected animals and match them with loving homes. Among the many volunteers who stepped up to assist was 31-year-old Stephanie Stern, who has dedicated much of her life to animal rescue. Employed as a supervisor at a wastewater treatment facility, Stern immediately reached out to participate in the rescue operation after learning about the situation.
During her time volunteering, Stern was involved in the medical intake process, which required assessing the health needs of the dogs. It was during this phase that she encountered Marshmallow. She recalls the moment vividly: “She plopped down and lay on her side like she wanted belly rubs,” said Stern. “Marshmallow just completely stood out to me.” The connection between them deepened when the beagle amiably kissed her on the nose, leaving a lasting impression on Stern.
Days after their first meeting, Stern found herself unable to shake thoughts of Marshmallow. Despite having fostered nearly 100 dogs throughout her years in animal rescue, something about Marshmallow was particularly compelling. However, during her intake shift, she had neglected to take a photograph of Marshmallow or gather information on where the dog would be relocated after the intake process concluded.
Armed with a few key details—a distinctive white face, missing two front teeth, and a numbered tattoo on her ear—Stern embarked on a mission to track down the beagle. She communicated with her fellow volunteers and researched various shelters involved in the Ridglan Farms rescue, eventually narrowing her search down to three rescue organisations in Minnesota.
Stern reached out to each of the shelters, sharing the information she had on Marshmallow and imploring them to help in her search. Her perseverance paid off when Ruff Start Rescue responded, confirming they had a dog fitting Marshmallow’s description. “I was at work, and I just felt like I was going to start crying. I was so excited,” Stern remarked, overjoyed to finally see a picture of the beagle she couldn’t stop thinking about.
After a short waiting period, Stern quickly submitted her application to adopt Marshmallow, emphasising her love for the dog and her commitment to providing a forever home. Soon after, Ruff Start approved her application and connected her with Marshmallow’s foster parent. On June 6, Stern took a five-hour drive to meet the foster parent and bring Marshmallow home.
Upon arriving at her new environment, Marshmallow appeared a bit apprehensive at first but soon settled in. With encouragement from Stern’s other dogs and her six-year-old daughter, Marshmallow began to shed her timid nature. “She learned how to be a dog from the other dogs in my house,” Stern observed, noting that even at nine years of age, Marshmallow was displaying puppy-like energy and enthusiasm.
As Marshmallow acclimatises to her new surroundings, she has started enjoying toys and even playing with her newfound companions. “It’s so cute to see her experience the good life,” said Stern. Marshmallow’s journey from a life of confinement to one filled with love and exploration exemplifies the transformative power of animal rescue.
