Maureen Kelly, the founder of the beauty brand Tarte, has officially launched her new venture, an electrolyte powder brand called Finnsul, alongside her two sons. The brand name is a combination of their names, Finn and Sully, and aims to address the growing concerns surrounding mental health and well-being. Launched in March, Finnsul quickly sold out of all six flavours within 24 hours, showcasing the demand for this innovative product.

Kelly, who has built a billion-dollar beauty empire over the past 27 years, revealed that the idea for Finnsul stemmed from her personal observations and experiences with her family. With her sons growing up balancing school, sports, and friendships, she recognised that these pressures resonate with a larger audience. “I just think this feeling is much bigger than our own family, and I think that people are very overwhelmed,” Kelly commented, highlighting the need for products that support mental wellness in tumultuous times.

The motivation behind Finnsul is not merely to create another sports drink. Instead, Kelly intends for her brand to encourage mindfulness and self-care. “It’s about helping people feel more grounded and present, better equipped for what life is throwing at them,” she explained. This philosophy sets Finnsul apart from traditional electrolyte drinks, which often promote pushing physical limits rather than taking moments to recharge mentally.
Finnsul’s product formulations are notable for being vegan, low-calorie, and devoid of sugar, artificial colours, or sweeteners. Additionally, the powder blends contain L-theanine, an amino acid reputed for its calming effects, making it a perfect companion for those dealing with stress and anxiety. Kelly underscores that true wellness encompasses both physical and mental health, making Finnsul an inclusive addition to one’s daily routine.
Working alongside her sons has proven to be a deeply rewarding experience for Kelly. She reflected on how they have been involved in her entrepreneurial journey from a young age. “They grew up watching me build my first company, and now they’re sitting beside me building the next one,” she said, expressing pride in their collaborative efforts. The dynamic within their partnership fosters a unique blend of ideas and creativity, with Kelly appreciating the differing perspectives her sons bring to the table.
As the conversation surrounding mental health becomes more prevalent, Finnsul is committed to supporting initiatives that promote access to mental health resources. A percentage of the net proceeds from every sale will be donated to mental health nonprofits, including a recent contribution of $10,000 to the Asian Mental Health Collective. “If we’re building a brand around supporting how people feel every day, giving back in that space feels like such an important part of that responsibility,” Kelly remarked.
This philanthropic commitment reflects Kelly’s history of social responsibility, originating from her early days with Tarte. Recognising the needs of women in shelters and those battling cancer, she would donate beauty products long before the company reached its current profitability. This legacy of giving back has continued to inform her practices at Finnsul, where support for mental health aligns seamlessly with the brand’s goals.
In conclusion, Finnsul is more than just an electrolyte powder brand; it is an endeavour rooted in compassion and awareness. Kelly aims to lessen societal pressure around productivity and promote a culture that values mindfulness and mental well-being. While acknowledging that wellness products are not substitutes for mental healthcare, Finnsul’s philosophy centres on encouraging individuals to take a moment for themselves—a mission that resonates with many in today’s fast-paced world.
As consumers increasingly seek products that align with their values, Kelly’s latest venture appears poised for continued success, driven by a genuine intent to foster positive change and well-being.
