Emily Wallace, a mother of six, credits her intuition as the driving force behind securing a life-altering diagnosis for her son, Griffin. Diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at merely 18 months, the news reshaped the family’s future while highlighting the profound challenges and joys of raising a child with disabilities.

Wallace, 37, and her husband William, 40, always envisioned a large family, having planned for their children: Harrison, 12, Wyn, 11, twins Griffin and Sawyer, 9, Posey, 8, and Lindy, 7. However, they did not anticipate the turbulent journey they would embark on following Griffin’s diagnosis when Emily was 20 weeks pregnant with Lindy.

Griffin’s diagnosis marked a turning point for the family. “When they told us the diagnosis for Griffin, we knew our family was done,” Emily explained. “Our lives were forever changed.” Angelman syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that relates to developmental delays, speech and balance difficulties, and intellectual disabilities, impacting nearly 500,000 people globally. This condition has also raised awareness through figures like Colin Farrell, whose own child has the syndrome.
Prior to Griffin’s diagnosis, Emily sensed that something was not quite right. Although he kept growing, he faced numerous difficulties with nursing and soon fell behind developmental milestones. Despite her maternal instincts, medical professionals initially dismissed her concerns, attributing his delays to being “just behind.” Undeterred, she changed Griffin’s paediatrician and sought further investigation, including genetic testing.
The diagnosis came as a profound shock. The genetic counsellor revealed that Griffin had Uniparental disomy (UPD), a genetic anomaly where both copies of a chromosome pair originate from one parent. Emily now understands that Griffin will require lifelong care, stating, “He’s never gonna go to college, he’s never gonna drive a car. We are his forever caregivers.” This reality contributed to her decision to stop having children, as she expressed that had she known of Griffin’s condition earlier, she might have reconsidered expanding their family.
As full-time caregivers, both Emily and William devote their lives to supporting their children. They relocated from upstate New York to Colorado, seeking better resources for their family’s unique needs. Emily notes that Colorado offers exemplary caregiving support: “The state pays caregivers well… that’s why if I could give Colorado a hug, I would.”
Navigating Griffin’s diagnosis was not without emotional turmoil. Emily candidly shares her experience of grieving the life she had envisioned for him. She remarked, “You grieve the life you thought your child was going to have. For some reason, all of us who have children have this vision… and when you’re given a child with a disability, that blueprint disappears.” This realisation cut deep, as she mourned milestones, such as his first steps and potential future milestones.
As the journey unfolded, the family encountered additional challenges. Emily and William later learned that Griffin’s twin, Sawyer, was diagnosed with autism, while the younger siblings experienced various challenges including dyslexia and a neurological speech disorder known as apraxia. Wyn, their second eldest, faces the ongoing challenges of Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis, a rare bone disease.
Amidst these challenges, Emily has found a sense of purpose. “As a seasoned special needs mum, I have learned that Griffin was not meant for that journey but for this one,” she stated, expressing her commitment to making the best of their situation. The emotional rollercoaster has led her to adapt and embrace the life they lead, focusing on the joys available within their unique circumstances.
Her experiences prompted her to establish social media channels on TikTok and Instagram, platforms through which she highlights the daily realities of parenting six children, four of whom have disabilities. “I wanted to show that these disabilities are not going to define our family,” she affirmed. Her message centres on advocating for joy, inclusion, and a high quality of life for her children.
Emily passionately believes that her children deserve opportunities for rich experiences, stating, “They deserve to go on vacation — they deserve it all.” She concludes with the heartfelt sentiment that, while her children are different, they share fundamental similarities with others: “They’re just like us too, and I just wanted people to see that we could have it all, even with all this hard.”
Through her story, Emily Wallace stands as a testament to the power of maternal instinct, resilience, and the unwavering love that fuels a family striving to thrive despite adversity.
