In a nostalgic turn of events, the beloved film *Practical Magic* is set to return to the big screen with its long-awaited sequel, *Practical Magic 2*, scheduled for release on 11 September 2026. Producer Denise Di Novi has shared her reflections on the original film and how it found a dedicated audience in the years since its debut.
When *Practical Magic* was first released in 1998, it faced significant challenges. Di Novi, however, had unwavering faith in the film’s ability to resonate with viewers. Based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, the story centres around the bond between sisters, a theme that struck a chord with Di Novi, who has long been a fan of Hoffman’s work. “I have always admired Alice Hoffman’s books, many of which are bestsellers,” she remarked. “This story particularly resonated with me due to its exploration of sisterhood.”
Di Novi went on to highlight the film’s appeal to major studios, noting that the casting of well-known actresses Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock significantly contributed to its development. “Warner Bros. recognised that this was a highly marketable film with two leading ladies,” she said. However, she also recalled the difficulties encountered in securing support for a project featuring multiple strong female leads, which was rare at the time.
Despite its star-studded cast, the initial critical reception was lukewarm. Di Novi pointed out that in the late 1990s, most reviewers were male and did not connect with the film’s themes. “It was incredibly unusual for a film to centre around female characters,” she stated. “At that time, the landscape was very different, and the emotional range presented in our characters was also quite rare.” She added, “Fortunately, audience tastes have evolved, and what was once overlooked has gained new appreciation.”
