Universal Pictures has confirmed that the iconic ancient Greek epic, “The Odyssey,” will make its way to the silver screen, with an impressive line-up of talent. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan, the film promises to bring Homer’s illustrious tale to life in a way that has never been seen before.

The project was officially revealed in December 2024, generating considerable excitement among film enthusiasts. Scheduled for release on 17 July 2026, “The Odyssey” follows the arduous journey of King Odysseus of Ithaca as he returns home after the Trojan War, a mission that stretches over a decade.

Nolan, renowned for his innovative storytelling, expressed his enthusiasm about tackling this epic within the framework of a high-budget Hollywood production. In a recent interview with TIME magazine, he remarked, “What had never really been done is a cinematic telling of The Odyssey with all of the capacity of a large-scale Hollywood studio production. It’s an odd gap in movie history.”
Leading the cast is Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, the titular hero of the story. Damon, who has previously collaborated with Nolan on the 2014 film “Interstellar,” was confirmed for the role in February 2025. The director’s unique vision for the character caught the actor’s attention, as he shared his excitement in various interviews leading up to the film’s production.
Tom Holland, popularly known for his portrayal of Spider-Man, takes on the role of Telemachus, Odysseus’ son. Holland’s involvement in the film was also disclosed in February 2025, and he later excitedly shared his eagerness to tackle this monumental character, despite not knowing much about the film’s overall direction initially.
Also featured in the stellar cast is Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope, Odysseus’ devoted wife. Hathaway, a longtime collaborator of Nolan’s, expressed her joy at being part of this cinematic venture, calling it a meaningful experience to return to Nolan’s projects. She remarked on the emotional weight of the opportunity, stating, “It fills me with so much joy … Getting invited into their world is one of the best places you can find yourself.”
Zendaya takes a pivotal role as Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. The actress noted that working alongside her husband, Holland, provided her with a sense of comfort during filming, enhancing their on-screen chemistry. Their collaboration has drawn attention not only for their romantic relationship but for their synergy in their performances as well.
The cast also features Robert Pattinson, who portrays Antinous, a character significant to the narrative’s unfolding. Pattinson, who previously worked with Nolan in “Tenet,” expressed his eagerness to immerse himself in the film’s mythological content.
The ensemble continues with notable performances from Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, the king of Sparta, and Lupita Nyong’o double-cast as both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Nyong’o’s roles anchor the film’s exploration of character complexities, particularly as they relate to themes of love, betrayal, and war.
Charlize Theron joins the cast as Calypso, the mythological nymph who ensnares Odysseus, while Elliot Page is portraying Sinon, providing another layer of intrigue within the story. Additionally, Himesh Patel takes on the role of Eurylochus, Odysseus’ loyal second-in-command, marking his second collaboration with Nolan.
Working with Nolan has also attracted several other high-profile actors, including Mia Goth as Melantho, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Travis Scott as a bard, and Samantha Morton as Circe, a goddess who plays a crucial role in thwarting Odysseus’ return home.
As the project progresses, the excitement is palpable. The adaptation promises to blend compelling storytelling with visual artistry that Nolan is known for, while also celebrating the timeless nature of Shakespeare’s themes. As anticipation builds, fans eagerly await the chance to experience “The Odyssey” as it navigates the intersections of mythology, human experience, and cinematic grandeur.
With such an exceptional cast and visionary direction, “The Odyssey” is set to captivate audiences when it finally opens in theatres in July 2026.
