Gleb Savchenko, a professional dancer known for his appearances on “Dancing with the Stars,” is seeking sole custody of his 15-year-old daughter, Olivia. The request has arisen in the wake of his ex-wife, Elena Samodanova, relocating their children to Hong Kong, which Savchenko claims was intended to be a temporary arrangement following their divorce.
The former couple shares two daughters, Olivia, aged 15, and Zlata, aged 8. According to court documents, Savchenko asserts that Samodanova has failed to return with the children to the United States as agreed upon. He alleges that she has established permanent residency in Hong Kong and has enrolled both daughters in a private school, while also starting a new life there, including becoming engaged and having another child.

Savchenko’s emergency custody filing suggests that he does not want Samodanova to have any visitation rights until the court can evaluate the situation further. He contends that his ex-wife’s actions have forced him to travel to Hong Kong annually to visit his daughters, despite what he describes as her efforts to limit his access. In response, Samodanova has denied these allegations, stating that Hong Kong is their permanent home and accusing Savchenko of unlawfully retaining Olivia in California by cancelling her flight to China.

In his filing, Savchenko claims that Olivia, who is currently living with him, does not want to stay in Hong Kong. He argues that her best interests would be served by allowing her to attend school in Los Angeles County. He mentioned that the teenager has voiced her fears of returning to Hong Kong, citing recent negative comments made by Samodanova, which allegedly included calling Olivia a “disgrace” to the family.
Moreover, Savchenko expressed concerns that commuting Olivia back to Hong Kong could lead to what he refers to as international wrongful retention or abduction. He is adamant that Olivia wishes to avoid living with her mother due to these reported conflicts.
In contrast, Samodanova has responded publicly through a statement to the media, where she maintains that she has been the primary caregiver for Olivia. She emphasised that her daughter is flourishing in Hong Kong, attending an esteemed school, and that Savchenko’s actions are undermining her daughter’s stability and education. Samodanova insists that Hong Kong is equipped with the necessary legal framework to support their family’s needs and that Savchenko’s abrupt cancellation of Olivia’s flight was without her knowledge or consent.
Samodanova further claimed that her former husband’s accusations misrepresent their family dynamics and urged the court to consider this before making decisions. She expressed concern about the nature of Savchenko’s legal filing, suggesting it was a hasty measure that sought to bypass proper legal protocols. Samodanova is appealing to the court to delay any temporary orders until her legal team can fully present Olivia’s situation.
The couple originally announced their separation in November 2020, expressing a mutual commitment to co-parenting their daughters amicably. However, Savchenko’s recent revelations indicate a significant shift in the dynamics concerning their joint custody agreement. He has shared that the girls moving to Hong Kong has been a significant emotional challenge, affecting his ability to be a consistent presence in their lives.
As the situation evolves, both parents are expected to attend a custody mediation session scheduled for later this week. This development highlights the complexities often associated with international custody disputes, particularly in cases where one parent relocates with the children.
The article highlights a growing tension between Savchenko and Samodanova over parental rights and responsibilities, raising questions about the impact such separations can have on children’s welfare amidst the backdrop of differing interpretations of legal custody. As both parties prepare to present their cases, the outcome will ultimately depend on the court’s assessment of the best interests of their daughters.
