Billy Corgan, the frontman of the iconic alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins, has recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of the band staging a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. In a candid interview with Consequence, Corgan expressed both admiration and apprehension regarding the feasibility of such an undertaking, acknowledging the monumental challenges that come with performing at the high-profile venue.

The Sphere, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and immersive production capabilities, has attracted a range of legendary acts, including U2 and the Eagles, who have successfully held residencies there. Corgan commended these artists, recognising the significant effort required to perform in a venue that accommodates around 20,000 spectators. “I’m really impressed by anybody who can play the Sphere because it’s a heavy lift. It’s a production thing, and you really have to draw a lot of people,” he remarked, appreciating the gravity of the task.

Despite his enthusiasm, Corgan expressed uncertainty about the band’s ability to draw a sufficient audience over time. “I’m not sure we’re big enough to draw enough people,” he conceded. However, he remained optimistic about the potential to create a unique experience that only the Smashing Pumpkins could deliver. In his view, the band’s theatrical style and distinctive sound could make for a memorable show, noting that it might resemble “a goth winter” set against the Sphere’s impressive backdrop.
Corgan’s musings on a potential residency were not limited to just the Las Vegas venue. He speculated that the planned expansion of Sphere venues globally could open doors for smaller bands seeking similar opportunities. In 2024, the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, alongside Sphere Entertainment Co., announced plans to construct another Sphere, which could facilitate a wider array of artists holding residencies. “Right now, you need bands that are big enough to draw multiple, multiple dates to make that whole thing work,” Corgan explained, underlining the current limitations within the live music landscape.
Highlighting the fact that the Smashing Pumpkins have not yet been approached for a residency, Corgan pointed out the importance of a dedicated fan base willing to travel to Las Vegas for performances. While he noted the difficulties of sustaining audience interest, he also expressed admiration for those who have successfully navigated the challenges of the venue. He acknowledged the effort required by bands like Phish, stating, “Mad respect to anybody who’s pulled it off.”
As the Smashing Pumpkins prepare for a significant North American tour later this year, Corgan’s reflections on the potential Sphere residency spark considerable excitement amongst fans. While it remains uncertain whether the band will take the plunge into such a venture, the prospect of their involvement with the Sphere continues to intrigue.
Currently, the Sphere’s programming features a lineup of prominent artists, including the Backstreet Boys, Carín León, the Eagles, and heavy metal legends Metallica. This diverse array of performances further emphasises the venue’s status as a prime location for major musical acts.
As the Smashing Pumpkins contemplate future projects, including their upcoming national tour, the idea of a Las Vegas residency lingers in the air. Corgan’s visions, along with the band’s knack for combining music with theatricality, suggest that should the opportunity arise, they could indeed provide a show unlike any other at this iconic venue.
