Justine and Huy Nguyen have celebrated their wedding in a uniquely entertaining manner that reflects their shared passion for gaming. The couple wants to create a memorable occasion that showcases their personalities and love for the gaming world. Their wedding, held recently at The Grand Ballroom at The Pearl in Grand Prairie, Texas, featured an array of gaming-inspired elements, much to the delight of their guests.

The couple, both aged 29 and software engineers, first crossed paths while studying at the University of Texas at Arlington in 2015. Their initial bond developed over competition in rhythm games, particularly Love Live! This gaming connection blossomed into a relationship as they explored various other games together, including League of Legends and Pokémon GO.
After taking their relationship to the next level in November 2018, the couple faced a long-distance period for two years, keeping their connection alive through gaming. As the Covid-19 pandemic forced isolation, they enjoyed virtual game nights and even took an interest in tabletop games. Most recently, they have embraced Riichi Mahjong, continuing to host entertaining game nights at home.
Following their engagement during a romantic hike in Okinawa, Japan, in May 2024, the couple quickly realised that a gaming-themed wedding would perfectly encapsulate their relationship. “We wanted our wedding to be fun and memorable,” Justine shared, outlining their decision. “We’ve been to many weddings and wanted to infuse our personality into this one.”
With the assistance of wedding planner Allison Thuy Wallace and event designer Viktoria Decor, the couple began to detail their vision, crafting gaming-themed invitations and save-the-dates that hinted at the exciting festivities to come. Their wedding party members received custom “proposal” boxes, further immersing everyone in the playful theme.
The couple’s themed wedding also extended to their bar menu, which featured cleverly disguised references to League of Legends. A fond cake topper showcased life-like figurines of Justine and Huy, each gripping video game controllers, perfectly illustrating their theme.
As part of their lively wedding reception, the newlyweds made an unforgettable entrance on kiddie cars. According to Justine, this quirky idea was spontaneous—her groomsmen procured the toy vehicles late the night before. “We didn’t even have time to practise, but we all had a good laugh about it when things didn’t go exactly to plan,” she recalled, adding that it resulted in a delightful moment for everyone present.
Guests were treated to an array of fun surprises, including gifts of Poké Ball replicas and plush toys. Justine lovingly remembered the event, describing it as an “I Choose You!” moment in homage to the beloved Pokémon franchise. A highlight of the evening was a photo booth where guests received custom Pokémon cards, which garnered great enthusiasm throughout the celebration.
During the cocktail hour, guests were encouraged to participate in a QR code game starring Justine as the protagonist on a quest to rescue Huy. Additionally, a Kahoot! trivia game enabled attendees to discover amusing tales about the couple. Huy particularly relished watching guests engage with the trivia, revealing their knowledge of the couple’s relationship in an entertaining setting.
The couple took an unconventional approach by forgoing the traditional first dance. Instead, they entertained their guests with a live Mario Kart battle, showcasing their gaming skills side by side on chairs, while family and friends rallied behind them. Justine remarked, “The room was filled with so much cheering, and some relatives even teared up watching because they were so happy for us.”
Ultimately, Huy emerged victorious in their playful gaming showdown. “I might’ve tried to let her win, but really, I’m just better at gaming!” he chuckled, showcasing the friendly rivalry that epitomises their relationship. Justine, having had her moments in other games like Tetris, accepted his victory with good humour.
Reflecting on their wedding, Justine confirmed that their gaming theme resonated well with their guests, who expressed that the event was distinctly representative of the couple. She elaborated, “Our theme might have been unconventional for a wedding, but we managed to blend it in such a way that it still felt elegant while highlighting our personalities.”
