Man Raped and Killed Estranged Wife, Then Staged Scene to Look Like She Died by Suicide

Michael Thompson, a 56-year-old man, is awaiting sentencing next week after being found guilty of the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, aged 43. The verdict was delivered following a six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, which uncovered a tragic story of domestic abuse and manipulation within their long-term marriage.

During the proceedings, prosecutors presented compelling evidence that Thompson had suffocated Kimberley in their shared home in Northampton. Despite having separated two years prior, the couple were still living together when the crime occurred in the early hours of 9 August 2025. Prosecutors indicated that the couple had been married for 19 years and were in the middle of divorce negotiations, with Kimberley expressing intent to move out and seeking £65,000 as a part of the settlement.

The court heard that after committing the crime, Thompson attempted to disguise his actions by staging the scene to resemble a suicide. He went as far as to post messages on Kimberley’s social media accounts and call for emergency services at around 5:30 am to report her unresponsive state. Initially, authorities were led to believe she had consumed alcohol and tablets, but a post-mortem examination later revealed that her system contained no alcohol and only trace amounts of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine.

Kimberley Thompson’s family and friends were unconvinced that she had taken her own life. They reported a history of domestic abuse during her marriage, leading to a murder investigation being initiated on 12 August. Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison, who led the investigation, noted that it became evident Kimberley had endured persistent domestic abuse, including manipulation and physical violence from Thompson.

Detective Harrison stated, “It became clear throughout our investigation that Kim had been subjected to domestic abuse for much of her relationship with Thompson, with manipulation, coercive control, and physical violence the norm.” This persistent abuse had significantly impacted Kimberley’s confidence, but those close to her reported a change following their separation, observing her regain enthusiasm for life.

In his attempt to cover up his crimes, Thompson was also convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice. The efforts he made to mislead investigators further illustrated the extent of his callousness. Harrison described the brutality of Thompson’s actions, labelling the rape and murder as part of a calculated attempt to make it appear as though Kimberley had taken her own life.

The revelations from the trial cast a spotlight on the grave issue of domestic abuse, highlighting the struggles of many individuals in similar situations. Kimberley had sought support from a domestic abuse service in 2013 but withdrew her complaint due to fear, demonstrating the challenges victims face when attempting to seek help.

As the community comes to terms with the harrowing case, Kimberly’s tragic story serves as a reminder of the need for increased awareness and support for victims of domestic violence. Thompson is expected to learn his fate in the coming week as the court prepares for sentencing.
