An outbreak of Cyclosporiasis has reportedly affected nearly 2,000 individuals across the United States, with Michigan seeing the highest number of cases. In light of this public health concern, some Taco Bell locations have temporarily halted the serving of specific ingredients.

Recent reports suggest that various Taco Bell outlets, particularly those in the Metro Detroit area, have displayed notices indicating a suspension of lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and cilantro onion due to a nationwide recall prompted by the cyclosporiasis outbreak. The signs have informed customers that items containing these ingredients would be modified accordingly. Images of these notices have been shared on social media platforms, including Reddit.
The recent surge in Cyclosporiasis cases has been alarming, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributing symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, including instances described as “explosive.” While most people recover without the need for medication, the continues rise in infections is prompting authorities to investigate the sources of the outbreak.
In Michigan alone, approximately 1,000 cases have been reported, marking a significant increase from the typical annual average of around 50 cases. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has highlighted the outbreak’s concentration within several counties in Southeast Michigan, including Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, Wayne, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Jackson.
Beyond Michigan, additional case clusters have emerged in states such as New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Florida, and Connecticut. As of now, the exact source of the contamination remains unidentified, which has elicited active investigations by health officials.
Experts, including Dr. Sohaib Imtiaz, Chief Medical Officer at People Inc, have suggested that the outbreaks may be linked to contaminated raw produce, including fresh herbs and salad mixes. Investigative efforts are focusing on potential sources such as agricultural water contamination, common food distributors, and restaurant practices in the affected regions.
In response to the crisis, health officials are advising the public to take several precautions to reduce the risk of infection. Recommendations include thoroughly washing all fresh produce and kitchen utensils, as well as cooking fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
As Taco Bell navigates this challenging landscape, the fast-food chain has yet to provide an official comment regarding whether any of its customers have contracted the illness specifically linked to its food.
Public health departments remain vigilant in their efforts to trace the origins of the outbreaks, hoping to mitigate further spread and protect consumer health. The ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety practices and the potential risks associated with foodborne diseases.
