Actress Barbara Eden, best known for her portrayal of the whimsical genie in the iconic television series “I Dream of Jeannie,” has shared insights into her unexpected journey to securing the role. Speaking at the red carpet event for Project Angel Food’s Lead with Love initiative, Eden, who is approaching her 95th birthday, expressed her surprise at being cast as Jeannie, especially given her contrasting appearance to the typical candidates vying for the part.
During the casting process for the show, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year, Eden believed that the role was not meant for her. “They had every tall brunette, winner of many beauty contests, they were testing,” she recounted in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. The emphasis on finding a Middle Eastern look for the character left Eden, described as a “short blonde,” feeling out of context. However, a script sent by her agent changed her perspective dramatically.

Upon reading the script, Eden felt an immediate connection. “It seemed familiar,” she recalled, revealing that her response prompted her agent to inform her that she had indeed been offered the part. “I thought, ‘Do they know what I look like?'” she asked, underscoring her initial disbelief.
A crucial meeting with Sidney Sheldon, the show’s creator, solidified her decision to take on the role. Eden portrayed Jeannie from 1965 to 1970, captivating audiences with her character’s romantic involvement with astronaut Tony Nelson, played by Larry Hagman. Eden’s performance and comedic timing not only made her a household name but also established “I Dream of Jeannie” as a cultural staple.
Reflecting on the legacy of the show, Eden expressed her joy at its continued relevance among fans worldwide. “It makes me feel so good,” she said. “I get a lot of fan mail, some from Moscow, Italy, the U.K., Poland, and even China.” The global affection for “I Dream of Jeannie” has left the actress astonished and deeply grateful.

Eden fondly recalled her time working alongside Larry Hagman, who passed away in 2012. Their camaraderie was evident both on and off the screen. “He was really a character,” she reminisced. Their professional relationship extended beyond “I Dream of Jeannie,” as the duo reunited in 2006 for a production of “Love Letters” in Clearwater, Florida.
The chemistry they shared was magical. Eden remarked, “We seem to be on the same wavelength when we’re acting,” hinting at the ease with which they collaborated. They also appeared together in the renowned series “Dallas,” where she portrayed LeeAnn De La Vega and Hagman took on the iconic role of J.R. Ewing.
As she reminisces about their time together, Eden reflected on Hagman’s ability to uplift those around him, even during their later performances. “He was fun,” she stated. “He always kept everybody happy.”
Looking ahead to her upcoming milestone birthday in August, Eden expressed contentment and gratitude. “I’m happy to be healthy,” she noted, acknowledging the importance of her cherished family and friends. At 94 years old, her reflections reveal a life filled with meaningful connections and cherished memories from a career that has left an indelible mark on television history.
Eden’s career, marked by her signature role as Jeannie, showcases the enduring charm and appeal of classic television. As she continues to engage with her fanbase, it’s clear that her legacy will remain vibrant, much like the character that endeared her to audiences around the world.
