As the leaves begin to change and the chilling air of autumn sets in, a new supernatural drama is poised to enchant audiences. “Coven Academy” is set to premiere on Freeform on October 1, with all episodes becoming available on Disney+ and Hulu a day later. The show invites viewers into a mystical world set in New Orleans, following the journey of Briar Roberts as she navigates life at a unique academy for witches and warlocks.
The narrative unfolds around Briar’s experiences at the academy, which is characterised by intense romantic entanglements and moments of turbulence. Central to the plot is her quest to uncover her true heritage, a journey that reveals long-hidden secrets that ultimately transform the academy itself. The intertwining themes of love, friendship, and acceptance are prevalent throughout the series, giving it a relatable depth that resonates with many viewers.
The characters in “Coven Academy” are not just individuals on a supernatural journey; they are also imbued with astrological significance. Each character embodies traits associated with various zodiac signs, adding an intriguing layer to their personalities. This astrological connection invites fans to reflect on their own signs and how they might relate to the characters featured in the series.
The first character spotlighted is McKenna, portrayed by Swayam Bhatia. As the quintessential Queen Bee of the academy, McKenna displays the vibrant confidence typical of an Aries. Her authoritative stance and relentless pursuit of recognition set her apart as a dominant presence in the school. Her character showcases Aries’ drive for success and the respect that comes with being at the pinnacle of social hierarchies.
On the more sceptical side of the magical spectrum is Tamora, played by a yet unnamed actress. She serves as Ollie’s aunt and is not particularly fond of the magical arts. Tamora’s persistent reluctance to embrace Crescent Vale’s ethos reflects the steadfastness of Taurus. Her character exemplifies the stubborn nature of this Earth sign, unwilling to compromise her beliefs despite the magical world surrounding her.
Another prominent character is Mr. Cole, represented by Devon Sawa. A favourite amongst students, Mr. Cole’s chilling yet serious approach to teaching embodies the dynamic duality often associated with Gemini. He captures the attention of his pupils with innovative ideas while maintaining a keen sense of responsibility, demonstrating the complexity of his character.
The nurturing side of the supernatural world is exemplified in Alexander, who mentors students in the ways of vampirism. Brendon Tremblay’s portrayal of Alexander reveals the protective instincts often linked to Cancer. While he is known for his tough love, his deep-seated concern for those around him echoes the caring nature of the Water sign.
In a storytelling twist, Tegan, played by Ora Duplass, represents Leo with her loyal and courageous attributes. Tegan’s affable disposition and knack for making friends easily highlight the warmth and friendliness associated with her fire sign. Her character serves as a cornerstone of loyalty within the narrative, embodying Leo’s unwavering support for friends.
The pragmatic Virgo is represented by Sasha, whose remarkable ability to read energy and emotions allows her to connect deeply with others. Played by Jordan Leftwich, Sasha brings a grounded intelligence to the series, demonstrating the analytical capabilities typical of her Earth sign. Her ability to understand others’ feelings without words showcases the empathic side of Virgo’s character.
Ollie, played by Louis Thresher, finds himself in an emotionally charged love triangle in the early days of his school life. As a Libra, Ollie embodies the quest for balance, navigating his feelings between the human and the supernatural. His character’s struggle to harmonise these worlds reflects the inherent challenge that Libras often face in their relationships.
The complexity of Scorpio is portrayed by Jake, as played by Malachi Barton. His character is loaded with charisma and hidden depths, making him an enigma to his peers. Scorpios are known for their multi-layered personalities, and Jake’s brooding yet kind nature aligns him with this astrological sign perfectly.
The lead character, Briar, portrayed by Malina Weissman, takes on the traits of Sagittarius, demonstrating an unyielding curiosity and a quest for truth. As she navigates the school’s mysteries and her mother’s legacy, Briar reflects the utmost determination of her sign to seek justice and understanding.
The character of Agnes, the academy’s archivist, reveals the historical wisdom and dry wit associated with Capricorn. With a deep appreciation for the past and the secrets of the academy, Agnes serves as a vital asset to the storyline, showcasing Capricorn’s reflective nature.
In the series, Tesse stands out as the emotional heart, aligning with the sensitive qualities of Pisces. This character struggles with the myriad changes of becoming a vampire, embodying the sensitive and empathetic traits often characteristic of this water sign.
With its rich blend of supernatural elements and astrological connections, “Coven Academy” promises to be a captivating addition to the autumnal television landscape. As audiences immerse themselves in the mystical rivalry and passionate alliances, they may find themselves reflecting on their own zodiac signs, making the characters’ journeys all the more relatable.
