Blake Lively has filed a significant legal claim against Justin Baldoni, seeking over £8 million in legal fees following the dismissal of Baldoni’s defamation lawsuit against her. The actress’s legal team submitted this request just weeks after the case was settled, a settlement that they described as a substantial victory for Lively.

The legal battle commenced when Baldoni filed a $400 million defamation suit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, in early 2025. This suit accused the couple of making false statements that damaged Baldoni’s reputation. However, the suit was dismissed just before it was set to go to trial in New York City. Following this dismissal, Lively’s lawyers argued that the case had required extensive resources and involved over 7,000 documents produced in discovery, contributing to the hefty legal fees they are now pursuing.

In their statement, Lively’s legal representatives, Michael Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, emphasised the importance of the dismissal. They remarked, “Thanks to this landmark decision, those considering using a lawsuit as a weapon of intimidation have been put on notice that there are consequences for doing so.” They articulated their belief that the ruling not only held Baldoni accountable but also set a precedent for future cases, protecting individuals from similar intimidation tactics.

According to the filed documents, Lively is seeking approximately $7.5 million for attorneys’ fees, in addition to around $540,000 to cover litigation costs. This request encompasses expenses incurred from January 2025, when Baldoni initiated his lawsuit, up until June 2025, when the court deadline allowed for an amendment to the now-dismissed complaint.
Lively’s claim also points to the high-profile nature of the case, highlighting the extensive media coverage it attracted, which they assert heightened the costs of the legal proceedings. The lawyers stated that the significant press attention led to thousands of indexed and syndicated articles that covered the evolving situation, adding to the complexity of the case and the costs associated with it.
Judge Lewis J. Liman has now mandated that Baldoni and his production company, Wayfarer Studios, respond to Lively’s legal fee request by July 13. Following this submission, the judge will determine the amount awarded to Lively, based on the merits of her claim and the details provided in her legal filing.
Baldoni’s legal representatives have not yet issued a public statement in response to Lively’s request for fees. However, earlier remarks made by Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni and Wayfarer, characterized the settlement as a “win and total victory” for his clients. This indicates that there may be contrasting views on the outcome of the legal dispute.
This latest development marks yet another chapter in a high-profile public saga, underscoring the often-tangled relationship between celebrity and legal matters. As Blake Lively seeks to recover her legal costs, the case exemplifies the potential repercussions of defamation lawsuits, both for individuals and their reputations.
As the situation progresses, it remains to be seen how Baldoni and Wayfarer will respond to Lively’s claims. The outcome could not only impact Lively’s financial situation but also serve as a precedent for similar cases in the future, particularly in an age where social media and public opinion can quickly influence legal disputes.
As the deadline approaches, the entertainment industry and legal analysts alike will likely be watching closely, awaiting the next steps from both parties involved in this high-profile saga.
