A twelve-year-old boy from Texas has shared a chilling account of his recent shark encounter while on holiday in the Bahamas. Parker Roll, who was bitten by a shark during a family outing, recounted the terrifying experience during an interview with Good Morning America, which aired on Monday, June 29.

The incident took place on June 23, off the coast of Staniel Cay, a remote island in the Exuma Cays. Parker explained that the family had set off with a boat crew to explore a secluded beach when they encountered the shark. His older brother, Jack, who was swimming nearby, was the first to spot the creature. Initially mistaking it for a rock, Jack soon realised it was a large nurse shark, but later learned that they were actually dealing with a reef shark, which can reach lengths of up to ten feet.
Parker vividly described the moment the shark attacked him, stating, “I just thought I was gonna die.” In the immediate aftermath, he felt a rush of adrenaline that dulled the pain of the bite, which he compared to the sensation of a knife stabbing into his calf and twisting. With his leg clamped in the shark’s jaws, the situation escalated dramatically as Jack heard “an ear-piercing scream” from his brother.

Demonstrating quick thinking, Jack tore off a piece of his swimsuit to stem the bleeding. “I immediately took off my swimsuit, because I was like, ‘Oh, we have to stop that bleeding,’” he recalled, illustrating his bravery in a harrowing situation. Following his brother’s prompt actions, Jack carried Parker to the beach, where their other sibling, Adam, called for help from the boat crew.
Once onshore, Parker was transported to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery. Reflecting on his experience, he described himself as “very lucky” that the bite did not result in the loss of his leg and credited his brother Jack as a hero for his timely intervention, declaring, “He stopped the bleeding and saved my life.”

Parker’s ordeal has undoubtedly been a life-altering experience for the family. Their father, Matt Roll, expressed initial concern about the severity of his son’s injuries, but he remains hopeful about Parker’s long-term recovery. Meanwhile, their mother, Katie, shared her immense gratitude that her son survived the attack. “I feel very, very grateful and blessed,” she said.
As the family reflects on the incident, they are taking time to appreciate the bonds that have strengthened through adversity. While such encounters with wildlife can be alarming, the family has also come away with a deeper understanding of the ocean and its inhabitants.
As Parker continues to recover from the attack, he looks forward to returning to the water, albeit with a newfound caution. His experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety while enjoying the beauty of marine environments, particularly in remote areas.
