Josh Duhamel, the celebrated actor known for his role as Leo du Pres in the long-running soap opera *All My Children*, recently opened up about his unexpected career path and the pivotal decisions that shaped his life. At 53, Duhamel acknowledges that choosing acting over a career in dentistry has been instrumental in his success.

Duhamel’s journey commenced in the late 1990s when he landed the role of Leo du Pres on *All My Children*, where he appeared from 1999 until 2002. It was during this formative period that he realised the importance of commitment to his craft, a sentiment he shared in an interview with PEOPLE. Reflecting on his early experiences, he stated, “I’m just so grateful that I got the chance to do *All My Children* because I was green when I got the job and I needed the reps.”

Having initially contemplated pursuing dental school, Duhamel ultimately opted for acting, a decision he does not regret. “There was a level of urgency and possibly desperation doing that show that really sort of pushed me to really go for it,” he explained. His choice to abandon a more traditional career path has long since proven to be the right one, as he has built a successful and diverse portfolio in the entertainment industry.
Growing up, Duhamel was exposed to the world of soap operas, thanks to his mother’s long-standing admiration for them, particularly *The Young and the Restless*. This background provided him with insights into the genre, which he aimed to enhance during his time on *All My Children*. “So I knew what it was supposed to be, and I tried to do everything I could to sort of change it up as best I could,” he noted.
The camaraderie and training offered by working on a daily soap opera served as a boot camp for many emerging actors, Duhamel included. “I still keep in touch with a lot of those people, and it’s like bootcamp. It’s a bootcamp for young actors trying to get reps,” he shared, highlighting the value of the relationships and skills developed during that formative phase.
Fast forward to today, and Duhamel’s career in acting shows no signs of slowing down. With numerous projects under his belt, he is now also involved with STOKE Shoes, a brand he supports not only as a customer but as a partner. This transition speaks to his desire for comfort and convenience as an active individual.
Duhamel describes STOKE Shoes as designed for “regular guys like myself,” emphasising their comfort and practicality. “The shoes are probably the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn, and I’m not even kidding you. I literally don’t wear anything else anymore because they’re so freaking comfortable and easy to get on and off,” he asserted.
As he reflects on his journey, Duhamel appreciates the creative opportunities presented by his partnership with STOKE Shoes. “Everything about this company — the price, the quality, the really fun marketing plan behind it — felt like something to shine a light on,” he elaborated, expressing his confidence in both the product and the team behind the brand.
The actor’s seamless transition from an aspiring dentist to a successful actor, and now a brand ambassador, underscores the significance of trusting one’s instincts. Duhamel’s story not only highlights the unpredictability of career paths but also serves as a reminder that following one’s passion can lead to fulfilling opportunities.
As Duhamel continues to make strides in his career, he remains grounded in the lessons learned along the way. His journey is a testament to the idea that sometimes, the best decisions are those that go against the expected path, opening doors to success in unexpected places.
