The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, has recently completed the National Three Peaks Challenge, an endeavour aimed at raising awareness and funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. This impressive feat involved scaling the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales within a 24-hour period. The challenging trek is designed to highlight life beyond cancer, and Princess Kate’s commitment to this cause has garnered significant attention.

During her ascent, Princess Kate shared a poignant moment with 11-year-old Ted Haslam, who was also participating in the challenge while fundraising for the charity, Molly Ollys. A touching exchange took place on Ben Nevis, one of the peaks, where the princess made it a point to check on Ted amid the less-than-ideal weather conditions. “How are you doing, Ted? You’re not too cold?” she inquired, showing her concern for the young climber’s comfort in the drizzly conditions.
Ted, who has faced incredible challenges due to his health — having been diagnosed with an aggressive spinal tumour at the age of three — tackled the climb with the support of family and friends. They assisted him with his wheelchair as they embarked on this demanding adventure. The young boy had a special ‘lucky mascot’ with him, symbolising the charity that had previously provided him with play equipment during his hospitalisation. This encounter between the princess and Ted emphasised the community spirit and resilience showcased throughout the challenge.

Reflecting on her own cancer journey, Princess Kate has previously stated how much solace nature provided her during her treatment. After announcing in March 2024 that she was undergoing cancer treatment herself, she celebrated her remission in January 2025 following a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital. Her personal experience has undoubtedly deepened her commitment to raising awareness about cancer and the importance of holistic care.

With the Three Peaks Challenge spanning 23 miles of rugged terrain and an elevation gain of over 10,000 feet, Princess Kate undertook this ambitious hike largely independently, with assistance from Mountain Rescue teams. She completed her final climb, Mount Snowdon, where she was warmly welcomed by her husband Prince William, their three children, and her family.
In a heartfelt message shared via social media, the Princess of Wales explained her motivations for taking on the challenge. Expressing her gratitude for her health, she said, “I’m so grateful to be here, to be strong enough to walk these hills.” She emphasized the drive to acknowledge the remarkable work being done across the country to support those living with and beyond cancer.
The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity responded positively to Princess Kate’s efforts, launching a dedicated fundraising page. The funds raised are aimed at expanding access to holistic care for even more cancer patients, echoing the princess’s own commitment to enhancing treatment options.
Earlier in June, Princess Kate visited The Christie NHS Foundation Trust to spotlight the significance of holistic care in cancer treatment. Her role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust was officially announced soon after her visit to the hospital, further solidifying her dedication to this important cause.
Kate Middleton’s remarkable challenge not only served to raise funds but also endeavoured to inspire others about the power of community support and the resilience of those affected by cancer. As the Princess of Wales continues her advocacy work, her efforts are likely to resonate with many and foster a greater understanding of the importance of comprehensive care in the fight against cancer.
