Johnny ‘Bananas’ Devenanzio has once again claimed victory in the latest season of the popular reality competition series, The Challenge, securing a total of eight wins in his career. However, this triumph is not without its controversies, as fans and former contestants have raised concerns regarding potential rule discrepancies during the finale.

The climactic finale of Season 42, titled Cutthroat, featured a showdown between Devenanzio’s team, known as the Orange team, and the Gray team led by Cara Maria Sorbello. Over two exhaustive days, competitors faced an extensive obstacle course that included complex puzzles and a staggering 20-mile run while tethered together. Ultimately, the Orange team emerged victorious, sharing a prize pot of $550,000, which was split among the team following Devenanzio’s preference for an equitable distribution.

Devenanzio, who took to the spotlight after the finale aired on Paramount+, acknowledged that winning is sometimes a matter of perspective. “A win is a win,” he stated, suggesting that the nuances of the competition might not hold significance in the long term. He admitted that the circumstances surrounding the victory were less than graceful and highlighted how external factors, including the extreme heat and medical concerns, influenced the production decisions during the final challenge.

One notable incident involved veteran competitor CT Tamburello, who required medical intervention during the grueling finale due to the intense heat and humidity experienced in Thailand. While his teammates carried on without him, Tamburello later rejoined the group, raising questions regarding the protocols surrounding medical time-outs. In contrast, the Gray team, which also contended with medical assessments, had to pause their progress, leading to discussions on the consistency of medical interventions and penalties across both teams.
Devenanzio elaborated on the medical emergency, reflecting on the conditions they faced, stating, “The heat index was 120 degrees, and we were pushing our bodies to the absolute breaking point.” He noted that the production adapted its rules concerning medical evaluations over the years to prioritise safety but did not believe this should overshadow the competitive nature of the season.
Another focal point of contention was the team’s strategy during an obstacle involving balancing on barrels. The Orange team opted to lean forward on the barrels, a tactic the Gray team had not employed. This prompted discussions about whether the Orange’s approach was permissible under the rules, which were not made abundantly clear to all participants.
Additionally, a puzzle known as the tangram, which the Orange team successfully solved in the sand before reconstructing it, became another area of dispute. According to allegations from the Gray team, they were prohibited from using the same method during their turn, leading to accusations of uneven application of the rules.
The leadership of Tori Deal, who captained the Orange team, has also faced scrutiny. Some viewers accused her of being overly demanding during a time when team members were grappling with heat-related fatigue. Devenanzio, however, came to her defence, emphasising her role in pushing the team to its limits. He argued that accountability lies with each competitor to ensure they are in top physical condition to handle the challenges presented.
Despite the mixed reactions to Deal’s leadership style, Devenanzio commended her performance, claiming she demonstrated an impressive evolution as a competitor throughout the season. He stated, “This was the first time that [Tori] really stepped into that truth of her being an absolute beast and a menace on the show.”
As discussions around this season continue to unfold, it appears that while Devenanzio’s win adds to his celebrated legacy within the franchise, it has also ignited debates surrounding fairness and the integrity of the competition. Fans remain divided on whether the controversies will overshadow the resultant victories or add another layer to the narrative of The Challenge.
As the series continues streaming on Paramount+, the question of how future seasons will respond to these concerns remains open. Contestants and audiences alike will be watching closely as the dynamics of competition and safety continue to evolve on this long-standing reality show.
