Dutton Ranch, the eagerly anticipated spinoff of the popular series Yellowstone, has been renewed for a second season following an impressive premiere on Paramount+ last month. The new series, featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, captivated audiences worldwide, racking up 12.9 million global viewers within its first week of release. This success marks the highest launch of an original series in the streaming platform’s history.

The announcement of the renewal comes just a few weeks after the series debuted on 15 May. Dutton Ranch also attracted 2.9 million viewers during its two-episode launch on the Paramount Network, setting a record for the biggest cable series premiere of 2023.

Jane Wiseman, the head of originals at Paramount+, expressed her excitement for the show’s future. “Beth and Rip are among the most iconic duos in television history and we are thrilled to bring a whole new world to life with Dutton Ranch for our subscribers around the world,” she stated. Wiseman also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the teams at Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios for their contribution to the show’s authentic storytelling.

Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios, noted that Dutton Ranch has strongly resonated with its audience. He appreciated the balance between maintaining the essence of beloved characters while also carving out a distinct identity for the series. “Thank you to our partners at Paramount+ and 101 Studios for a phenomenal first season,” he added, expressing anticipation for future storytelling in the second season.

The narrative of Dutton Ranch centres around the complex relationship between Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they strive to create a life together in South Texas, away from their tumultuous past in Montana. As they work towards a fresh start, they inevitably confront new adversities and menacing foes.

Reilly and Hauser have portrayed their characters for nearly a decade, first debuting as Beth and Rip in Yellowstone in 2018. The pair is beloved for their intense portrayals of a couple marked by both passion and turmoil. Speaking ahead of the Dutton Ranch premiere, Reilly reflected on the complicated dynamic between Beth and Rip. “There was such a history of Beth and Rip and what they meant to each other,” she noted, acknowledging the rocky beginning of their relationship.

Hauser, too, shared his thoughts on the relationship’s complexity, remarking that it was a bold creative choice by show creator Taylor Sheridan to initially present the characters in such a challenging light. “I actually thought it was funny,” Hauser chuckled, suggesting that the unconventional beginnings allowed both actors the freedom to explore their characters’ depths.

It was previously revealed that Feehan will not be returning for the second season.

Dutton Ranch debuted with its first two episodes on Paramount+ on 15 May, with new episodes released weekly on Fridays.
