Paul Rudd is set to showcase his latest film, “Rain Reign,” at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6. The indie movie marks a significant milestone in the actor’s extensive career, as it represents his inaugural collaboration with his wife, Julie Rudd, who is stepping into the role of producer for the first time.

In “Rain Reign,” Rudd plays a supportive uncle to Rose, portrayed by newcomer Felice Kakaletris. The character of Rose is described as a neurodivergent 12-year-old coping with the loss of her beloved dog, Rain, during a storm. This emotionally charged narrative not only highlights the bond between the characters but also provides insight into the struggles of young individuals grappling with grief.

For Paul Rudd, who has appeared in nearly 150 projects over his long career, this film is particularly special. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, he shared the joy he felt working alongside Julie. “She was mighty involved before I was, certainly. It was awesome working with her,” he remarked. He appreciated the opportunity to share the filming experience with her, particularly given that the production took place in upstate New York, close to their home.
Reflecting on their work dynamic, Rudd stated that throughout his career, he and Julie have communicated about balancing their lives, especially considering the frequent travel required by his acting commitments. For the first time, however, they were able to work side by side, adding a new dimension to their relationship. “We each kind of have these roles and this was like one of the first times, the first time really, that we really did kind of go to work together and it was really nice,” he shared.
Adding to the familial aspect of the film, Rudd’s children, Jack, 20, and Darby, 16, participated in the production by visiting the set on several occasions. Paul humorously noted that it was a rare treat for him, as his children are now busy with their own lives. In their youth, they might have only been interested in the craft service table, but this time they wanted to be involved in the filmmaking process. “It was kind of cool that they wanted to come to set on this one,” he said.
“Rain Reign” also affords Rudd a reunion with his “Clueless” co-star Jeremy Sisto. Over three decades since the release of the beloved 1995 film, the two actors are collaborating once again, with Sisto taking on the role of Rose’s struggling single father. Rudd expressed his appreciation for their shared history and camaraderie, noting that their mutual friends and the connections between their children added to the significance of their reunion.
As the film approaches its premiere at Tribeca, Rudd conveyed his excitement about the debut of both Kakaletris and first-time director Erika Burke Rossa. He noted the importance of seeing fresh talent showcased at such a prestigious festival. “I’m very excited for Felice because she’s so great in the movie, and I’m really excited that she’s going to get to see it in a film festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, see it with an audience,” he enthused, acknowledging the special moment for both the young actress and the director.
With “Rain Reign,” Paul Rudd not only highlights his range as an actor but also showcases the collaborative spirit of family and the value of working alongside loved ones. As the anticipation builds for the film’s premiere, it promises to resonate with audiences both for its heartfelt story and the personal connections at its core.
The Tribeca Film Festival continues to serve as a platform for innovative storytelling, and with Rudd’s involvement, “Rain Reign” is likely to capture the attention of festival-goers. The film represents more than just another addition to Rudd’s extensive filmography; it embodies a family-oriented project that celebrates the bonds of love, loss and the journey of navigating life’s challenges together.
