Federal health authorities in the United States are currently investigating a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 119 individuals across 36 states, with 32 people requiring hospitalisation since the start of 2025. The outbreak has drawn attention following the recall of specific moringa supplement pills produced by Total Nutrition Inc., leading to growing concerns among consumers.

The company has taken the precautionary step of recalling several lots of its TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa capsules due to potential Salmonella contamination. These products, which have been distributed widely through well-known online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and Target, are now under scrutiny by health officials.
As of 27 May, reports indicate that 119 individuals have contracted one of the outbreak strains, resulting in hospitalisations, although fortunately, there have been no fatalities linked to the incident. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been actively involved in this inquiry, which has revealed that many affected individuals reported consuming products containing moringa leaf powder before falling ill.

The recall, initially announced on 26 May, was expanded just days later on 2 June to include additional lots as investigations revealed a more extensive outbreak associated with dietary supplements containing imported moringa powder. The FDA continues to pursue the investigation into the matter.
Customers who purchased the affected products, identified under specific lot numbers such as 2507199, 2512-304, 2793, and 2748 for TNVitamins, as well as certain lot numbers for Doctor’s Pride, are now advised to cease using the products immediately, dispose of them safely, and reach out to the company for a refund. The recall notice emphasised that while Total Nutrition has halted the distribution and sale of these items, no other products under the TNVitamins or Doctor’s Pride labels are believed to be implicated.
Salmonella can be particularly hazardous, especially for vulnerable groups, including young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The contamination is often associated with symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, it can lead to serious health complications.
In response to the ongoing situation, Total Nutrition announced its proactive recall, describing the decision as a measure taken out of an “abundance of caution.” The company expressed regret for any distress or inconvenience caused to its customers and reiterated its prioritisation of consumer trust and health.
As the investigation continues, health officials are urging consumers to remain vigilant and informed about the products they use, especially those containing moringa. With the increasing popularity of dietary supplements, the need for robust safety measures and accountability in the industry is more crucial than ever.
For those affected by the outbreak, the CDC and FDA recommend staying in touch with healthcare providers if symptoms arise and keeping informed about the updates related to the investigation. As this case unfolds, public health officials aim to enhance safety protocols surrounding dietary supplements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
