The events unfolded on Tuesday, October 20, shortly after 10 a.m. local time. Officers from the Alice Town Police Station received reports of an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. By the time police arrived, the mother had already been transported to a local clinic, where attempts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful. The doctor on duty subsequently pronounced her dead.
Reports indicate that the mother was snorkelling in the waters near the southern point of North Bimini when a powerful current swept both of her sons away from her. In a brave attempt to rescue her children, she too was pulled into the treacherous waters. A captain from a local water taxi, who played a crucial role in the rescue effort, confirmed that despite the challenging conditions, both boys were brought to safety. “It happened really, really fast. I’m still in shock too,” stated Linty Stuart, the water taxi captain.

Despite efforts by the captain and the first mate, Jason Saunders, who assisted in the rescue, conditions in the water were incredibly perilous with large waves complicating their attempts to save the mother. “It’s scary. We tried… It’s sad,” Saunders reflected on the tragic circumstances.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force released a statement, clarifying that initial investigations do not indicate any foul play. An autopsy is set to be conducted to determine the cause of the woman’s death, though details regarding her sons’ condition remain undisclosed.
In response to the tragedy, a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas. We are in contact with the local authorities and providing support to her family.”
This unfortunate incident marks the fourth reported drowning in the waters surrounding Bimini in the past two years, including previous cases involving snorkellers. The police have yet to comment further following the initial investigations.
As the family navigates through this devastating loss, the local community and officials continue to express their sympathies and support. The accident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers that natural waters can present, particularly when weather conditions change abruptly.
With the ongoing inquiries and investigations, local authorities are keen to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident to prevent further tragedies in the future.
