The Lindale community in Texas is reeling from the tragic death of eight-year-old Adrian Sue Thompson, who passed away following a choking incident at her school. The young girl, remembered for her vivacious spirit, died on April 16 after suffering a medical emergency the previous day at Velma Penny Elementary School.

According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, Adrian’s death has been ruled an accident, with choking cited as the cause. Reports confirm that the incident unfolded during lunchtime on April 15, leading to desperate efforts by school staff to save her life. Despite the quick enactment of lifesaving measures by a school nurse, Adrian was later taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, where she succumbed to her injuries.
In a statement addressing the tragic event, Lindale Independent School District (ISD) outlined the efforts made by staff to aid Adrian. The school nurse initially administered the Heimlich maneuver, followed by the use of a LifeVac device, and ultimately commenced CPR as the seriousness of the situation became clear. First responders were then dispatched to the scene and continued the emergency care before transporting her to the hospital.
Stan Surratt, the ISD Superintendent, expressed heartfelt condolences in a letter to parents and community members, commending the efforts of the staff, teacher aides, and first responders who “acted swiftly and courageously” in their attempts to save Adrian. He extended his sympathy to Adrian’s parents, Anna and Greg, highlighting the depth of their loss. “Our hearts go out to her parents as they endure a grief no parent should ever have to face,” he wrote.
The superintendent also mentioned that the school district is cooperating with an investigation led by the Texas Rangers to ensure clarity surrounding the incident. This cooperation aims to provide answers to the Thompson family and the wider community once the inquiry is complete.
Adrian was fondly remembered in her obituary, which described her as “expressive, fun, and always ready for an adventure.” The family reflected on her character, noting her empathy, inquisitiveness, and love for creativity. Her hobbies included playing Minecraft, engaging in various art projects, cooking, and spending time with her friends. Adrian’s ability to embrace life and cherish every moment resonated deeply with those who knew her.
The community’s outpouring of grief was palpable as her funeral was held on May 2 at Bethel Bible Church South Campus in Tyler. Many attendees remembered Adrian as a “precious daughter, student, and friend” whose absence will be profoundly felt.
As the Lindale community comes to terms with this heartbreaking loss, they are reminded of the fragility of life and the importance of supporting one another through difficult times. The story of Adrian Sue Thompson serves as a poignant reminder of the impact a young life can have, and the lasting memories she created with those around her.
