A man has been convicted of murdering his long-term partner and subsequently setting fire to her home, resulting in a devastating explosion. Clifton George, aged 44, was found guilty of killing Annabel Rook, 46, in an incident that shocked the Hackney community in London. The conviction took place at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, 3 June 2025.

The Crown Prosecution Service stated that George had initially pleaded guilty to lesser charges of manslaughter and arson, but he denied the more serious charge of murder. The tragic events unfolded on 17 June 2025, when emergency services responded to reports of an explosion in a residential property just after 5 am. He also shared details of her altruistic work, including co-founding MamaSuze, an initiative aimed at providing creative support for refugee women. “We know that it would have been Annabel’s wish that her life should not be defined by her tragic death, but by the rich legacy of love and support for the vulnerable,” he added.
