While Marilyn Monroe may have passed away over six decades ago, her link to some of the world’s most opulent properties maintains a magnetic pull for film enthusiasts and tourists alike. Celebrated for her remarkable contributions to cinema, Monroe’s life was intertwined with luxurious hotels that provided her refuge from the glare of Hollywood. As her centenary approached, the allure of these venues, which played significant roles in her life, continues to captivate visitors.

Throughout her career, Monroe became synonymous with elegance, often favouring discreet accommodations that afforded her both comfort and privacy. Notable among her haunts were California’s Hotel Bel-Air and the Beverly Hills Hotel, both of which offered the perfect blend of luxury and seclusion. Tiffany Lai, the current manager at the Hotel Bel-Air, reflects on Monroe’s affinity for the establishment, particularly its serene pool area, where she would often unwind during visits with her then-husband Joe DiMaggio. Lai described the hotel as “tucked away” yet inviting, highlighting how the environment allowed Monroe to relax away from her hectic daily life.
In a poignant reminder of her connection to the hotel, Monroe returned to the Bel-Air for an iconic photoshoot with photographer Bert Stern in June 1962. This session, which took place just six weeks before her untimely death, would be known as “The Last Sitting.” Lai remarked on the natural charm captured in the photographs, reflecting Monroe’s effortless grace and genuine smile during this intimate time.
The Beverly Hills Hotel also held a special place in Monroe’s heart. General manager John Scanlon shared insights into her fondness for the property, noting that she frequently resided in various bungalows, with bungalows number 1 and 7 being personal favourites. She often dined in the hotel’s Polo Lounge, where table number six became synonymous with the star. Monroe’s lengthy relationship with the hotel was emblematic of her life in Hollywood as she mingled with other notable figures in film.
Monroe’s journey took a significant turn when she moved to New York City and resided at the prestigious Waldorf-Astoria. This period marked a transformative phase in her career as she sought to regain control of her professional life following her separation from DiMaggio. Historian David Freeland noted that her apartment, situated on the 27th floor of the Waldorf Towers, epitomised her desire for a more private existence in the bustling city. Living a life marked by a departure from her Hollywood persona, Monroe wore less makeup and attended acting classes, allowing her to embrace life as a New Yorker.
Though Monroe’s time in New York was an attempt to redefine herself, the pressures of the film industry eventually drew her back to Hollywood. In 1958, she signed on for a role in Billy Wilder’s classic comedy, *Some Like It Hot*, leading her to the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego for filming. Gina Petrone, the hotel’s heritage strategist, emphasised the significance of Monroe’s return, noting that it was a major moment for the star who had been absent from Hollywood for two years. Unlike the conventional studio sets she was used to, this film was shot on location, generating excitement among fans and tourists alike.
One memorable encounter at the Hotel Del Coronado involved a young boy walking his dog, who approached Monroe and her entourage. Recalling the incident, Petrone laughed as she described how the boy became utterly frozen upon realising he was face-to-face with the legendary actress, especially after she offered him a kiss, prompting a swift exit from the star-struck child.
Today, more than sixty years after Monroe’s passing, these storied hotels remain sanctuary-like destinations for her admirers and those enchanted by the golden age of Hollywood. The ability to stand on the same beach where Monroe once filmed creates a tangible connection for visitors wanting to experience a piece of her legacy. Petrone expressed the joy in knowing that such places continue to resonate deeply with people looking to understand the charm and charisma that defined Monroe’s life.
In reflecting upon the enduring legacy of this timeless icon, it is evident that her relationship with these luxurious properties not only provided her with solace but also continues to be a source of fascination for fans worldwide. Visitors flock to these sites, seeking to relive the glamour of old Hollywood through the tales and experiences connected to Monroe, ensuring that her spirit remains ever-present amidst the glamour and glitz of contemporary culture.
