The search for Matt Brown, a former star of the reality television series *Alaskan Bush People*, has been temporarily halted as authorities grapple with treacherous conditions on Washington’s Okanogan River. Brown, who was reported missing, is believed to have been seen near the river before concerns regarding his safety arose.
On Saturday, 30 May, the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) issued a statement explaining that search efforts had been suspended due to “dangerous” river conditions exacerbated by recent rainfall. This decision was made to allow authorities time to gather information that would assist in focusing future search operations.

Prior to the suspension, search teams had employed various methods to locate Brown, who was last seen in an area close to the river. Over the course of several days, sheriffs and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel deployed boats, personal watercraft, sonar technology, and divers to search an increasingly broad area. Additionally, a specially trained canine from Spokane, skilled in detecting human remains, was summoned to assist in the operation.
The OCSO noted that, despite extensive efforts, no signs of Brown or confirmation of his whereabouts had been found. River conditions have continued to worsen, with heightened levels and a stronger current making it more difficult for teams to conduct their search adequately. The sheriff’s office remarked that the active flow of the river may suggest that Brown has been carried away from the site where he was last seen.
This search effort has gained further attention following comments made by Brown’s brother, Bear Brown, who indicated in a TikTok video that witnesses had informed him of Matt’s distress. Bear suggested that witnesses had reported seeing Matt in or near the river, adding that he had heard claims that his brother may have taken his own life.

Bear’s public remarks have Fuelled public concern, but he has acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his brother’s fate due to the ongoing search, which has so far yielded no results. He emphasised that while he is not in a position to confirm the claims about Matt’s death, reports have led to a somber outlook.
Matt Brown’s recent behaviours had also sparked apprehension among his fans and followers. Earlier this month, he shared a troubling livestream where he disclosed that he had spent a night in a cemetery, revealing that he felt unsafe elsewhere. This statement added to the anxiety surrounding his mental health, particularly given his past struggles with alcohol dependency; in 2019, he left the show to enter treatment.
The OCSO clarified that as of now, the identification of the deceased male has yet to be confirmed, and authorities are withholding the name until notification has been made to the family. They have also indicated that search operations will resume once conditions allow, and they are actively monitoring the situation.
Previously reported to be last seen in shallow waters, an anonymous caller had alerted 911 to report his presence, leading to the formal search. As the authorities navigate these challenges, the focus remains on safety whilst attempting to locate Matt, as well as provide support to his family during this distressing time.
The reality television community and the public at large are holding onto hope for a resolution, while many are also reminded of the importance of mental health. For those struggling with personal crises, helplines such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are available 24/7 for support and guidance.
As the situation continues to develop, the community waits for news, hoping for Matt Brown’s safe return while reflecting on the often unseen battles that many individuals can face.
