Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Mayor of New York City, has made headlines not just for his political aspirations but also for his unique experiences during the city’s famed marathon. Having participated in the New York City Marathon in both 2022 and 2024, the latter not only marked a personal achievement but also served as the launchpad for his mayoral campaign.
In a candid conversation with Runner’s World, Mamdani shared an unexpected highlight from the 2024 race—a cigarette break. Around the 10-mile mark, as he passed through Greenpoint, he encountered a local enthusiast who offered him a cigarette. “I’d had a pretty good race until that point by my standards,” he recalled, “but, for some reason, I decided to smoke for a moment as I ran by and the rest of the race went downhill pretty quickly.” This whimsical moment certainly adds a lighter note to his marathon experience.

Describing the marathon as an event that unites New Yorkers like few others, Mamdani remarked, “You see New Yorkers from every borough lining the streets, cheering on complete strangers like they’re family.” According to the mayor, crossing the finish line is not just a personal achievement; it represents the collective spirit of a city that comes together to support its participants.

Mamdani’s marathon times show his dedication to the event, with his performance improving from 6:04:52 in 2022 to 5:38:10 in 2024. Despite self-identifying as a slow runner, his efforts during the marathon reveal a persistent passion for the sport. However, his increase in political duties following his inauguration on January 1st has significantly reduced his running schedule. He admitted that he has only been able to run a few miles every couple of weeks since taking office.
Yet, the mayor is determined not to let his love for running fade completely. He recently resumed his training, focusing on using the sport in a meaningful way to address pressing political issues. In a collaboration with New York Road Runners, he is supporting the city’s new 2-K childcare initiative.
To celebrate this initiative, Mamdani and the Road Runners are organising a two-kilometre race dubbed the “2K for 2-K,” set to take place on June 7. This event aims to highlight the importance of childcare services within the city and underline Mamdani’s commitment to supporting families across New York City.
As a public figure, Mamdani’s reflections on running extend beyond mere personal fitness; they tie directly into his vision and aspirations for the city. He believes that the energy of events like the marathon can foster community spirit and encourage civic engagement.
With his unique blend of political ambition and personal anecdotes, Mayor Mamdani is not only making his mark as a leader but is also championing a healthier, more connected community through the sport he loves. The upcoming 2K race promises to be an opportunity for residents to engage with one another while also promoting an important cause, showcasing the intersection of fitness, family, and politics.
As he continues his journey as mayor, Mamdani remains hopeful about encouraging more citizens to embrace running and participate in community events. His approach underscores a belief in the power of sport to create bonds and lift spirits, proving that leadership and leisure can indeed go hand in hand.
