Hollywood actor Josh Brolin has opened up about his path to sobriety during a candid interview with The Telegraph. The acclaimed star, now 58, shared insights into his daily routine that supports his commitment to sobriety, which he has maintained for over a decade. Brolin, known for his roles in films such as “Dune” and “Avengers: Endgame,” expressed his newfound appreciation for life without alcohol, stating, “I love being sober.”
In the interview published on 17 October, the actor detailed how a life-altering incident prompted him to reconsider his relationship with alcohol. Brolin recounted a particular moment of clarity when he found himself waking up on the pavement outside his own home. “It felt like a fork in the road. Which way was I going to go for the rest of my life?” he mused, illustrating the gravity of his situation.

To support his sobriety, Brolin has established a disciplined daily routine that includes a 6 a.m. Zoom meeting every morning. He emphasised, “Twelve years, and I do a meeting every morning at 6 a.m. on Zoom.” This structured approach has been integral to his recovery, helping to ground him in his commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
Brolin’s history with alcohol and substance abuse has been tumultuous. He openly admitted to past struggles, including an incident involving the assault of six police officers while under the influence, which ultimately led to an arrest. Following that event, the court offered him an opportunity to mitigate his sentence by attending rehabilitation, which Brolin accepted. However, his initial path to sobriety was not straightforward, as he later found himself drinking again after relocating to Tucson with his first wife, Alice Adair.
Reflecting on his transformation, Brolin remarked on how significantly his perspective has shifted. “I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus,” he quipped. The actor has also battled drug addiction in his past, mentioning that he occasionally experimented with heroin, although he did not classify himself as a full-blown addict.
In his memoir, “From Under the Truck,” Brolin recounts a poignant turning point in his relationship with substances. He shared a deeply personal story about getting intoxicated on the day he was meant to take his brother to visit their grandmother, who was gravely ill. Upon realising his neglect, he felt ashamed as he walked into the hospital room where his grandmother greeted him with her last smile. This moment profoundly impacted him, leading him to reflect, “If this woman could get through 99 years on life’s terms, how dare me?”
His commitment to sobriety has been strengthened by the responsibility that comes with being a father of four children. Brolin shares two daughters with his current wife, Kathryn Boyd Brolin, and an older son and daughter with his ex-wife, Alice Adair. The actor noted how his role as a father has motivated him to embrace a healthier lifestyle, ensuring that he is present and engaged in their lives.
Reflecting on his past, Brolin expressed a desire to live life differently moving forward. “I was 45 years old, and I’d gotten away with a lot, been in jail nine times, done a little bit of whatever,” he recalled. He pondered the idea of experiencing the remainder of his life with clear intentions, aiming to live fully and authentically.
Brolin’s journey of sobriety serves as a testament to resilience and personal growth. As he continues to thrive in both his professional and personal life, the actor’s story resonates with those facing similar struggles, proving that it is possible to overcome adversity and lead a fulfilling, sober life. With the release of his latest film, “Whalefall,” he undeniably showcases not only his talent as an actor but also the strength of character that has defined his remarkable transformation.
