Prior to the finale, co-creator Paul W. Downs revealed that the show’s creators had a clear vision for how they wanted the series to end from the very beginning. Speaking with PEOPLE, he noted that while many elements evolved throughout the show’s run, the fate of Deborah Vance was something they had pitched long ago. “It’s something that we pitched when we pitched the series. The fact that we were able to do it is the proudest I’ve been about the show,” Downs expressed.

In the closing episode, viewers learned that Deborah, facing a terminal health diagnosis, had made a significant decision regarding her future. As the episode unfolds, Deborah confides in Ava that the cancerous mass previously removed from her body has returned, and rather than pursue further treatment, she intends to travel to Paris before ending her life at an assisted suicide facility in Zurich. This decision sets the stage for a poignant final journey that explores themes of friendship, legacy, and redemption.
Ava, realising the gravity of Deborah’s intention, chooses to accompany her on what they perceive to be a final adventure. Their trip to Paris, filled with extravagant experiences from clubbing to private tours of the Louvre, is a celebration of life despite the weight of the impending goodbye. Yet, as the story unfolds, Deborah experiences an epiphany, realising she still has more to offer the world. As she expresses to Ava, “I may not have 30 years, but I think I have another hour,” the pair return to Las Vegas to focus on a new comedy special together.
The creative team behind ‘Hacks’ aimed to illustrate the transformative power of comedy and connection through Deborah’s character arc. Co-creator Lucia Aniello explained to Variety, “The purpose of having her be sick was for the ultimate redemption, the idea of the comedy and writing together saving her life.” The finale underscores the message that a passion for creativity can fiercely ignite hope, reinforcing that Deborah does not succumb to despair but instead seeks to continue her life in a meaningful way.
Meanwhile, Ava’s character also undergoes notable development in the finale. The episode opens with her directing a pilot for a reimagined version of the 1970s sitcom ‘Who’s Making Dinner?’, reflecting her growth into a confident creative force. By the end of the episode, Ava and Deborah walk down the Las Vegas strip, arm-in-arm and sharing laughter, symbolising their renewed commitment to one another and their work. This moment serves as a triumphant conclusion to their shared narrative.
Other character arcs are beautifully tied up as well. In earlier episodes, the characters of Jimmy and Kayla played by Downs and Megan Stalter, navigate their own struggles within the Latitude talent agency. In the series s finale, they stumble upon a scandal involving the company’s exploitation of deceased clients’ voices and likenesses. This revelation empowers them to confront Michael, the agency president and Kayla’s father, leading to their takeover of the firm. Their story culminates as they reclaim their authority within Latitude, once again sitting at the desks they occupied at the series’ outset, but this time with the agency under their control.
Additionally, Deborah’s entrepreneurial dreams come to fruition, culminating in the grand opening of her casino, The Diva. In a poignant speech at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, she reflects on her journey and the city of Las Vegas, declaring it a place where one can truly embrace oneself without shame. This moment highlights the show’s enduring themes of resilience and authenticity, resonating with both the characters and the audience.
In its final moments, ‘Hacks’ leaves viewers with an enduring sense of joy and optimism, reinforcing the bonds of friendship, creativity, and the importance of seizing life with both hands. As the iconic melodies of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand play, the screen fades to black, but the impact of Deborah and Ava’s story will linger long after the credits roll. The finale not only marks the end of a beloved series but serves as a celebration of two remarkable women navigating life’s complexities together, reminding viewers of the healing power of laughter and the strength found in companionship.
