Authorities are intensifying their search efforts for a 60-year-old hiker who has been reported missing in California’s Desolation Wilderness. Jason Coughran was last heard from on Monday, May 25, around 4 p.m. local time, as he made his way from Fallen Leaf Lake into this expansive wilderness area, known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Coughran was believed to be in the vicinity of Angora Peak earlier that day, around 11 a.m. This information prompted an immediate search operation involving search and rescue teams who have been scouring the area since he was reported overdue.
Coughran is described as a white male, standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes, with an athletic build. While officials are uncertain about his exact clothing, it is believed that he may have been wearing khaki shorts at the time of his disappearance.
As of Thursday, May 28, the alert for Coughran remains active, and the search efforts continue. A spokesperson for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the situation is being treated with urgency, and they are appealing to the public for assistance.
Desolation Wilderness is a popular hiking destination located within the El Dorado National Forest. Spanning approximately 63,960 acres, the area features subalpine and alpine forests, granitic peaks, as well as glacially-formed valleys and lakes. Nestled to the west of Lake Tahoe and north of Highway 50, the wilderness requires visitors to obtain permits for day use or overnight camping, in order to manage the influx of outdoor enthusiasts.
The search for Coughran has been complicated by changing weather conditions in the region. Reports indicate that while Monday saw clear skies, the weather shifted dramatically by the following day. As temperatures dropped, windy and cold conditions set in, accompanied by reports of snow and fog at South Lake Tahoe Airport. The sheriff’s office issued a reminder about the capricious nature of weather in high elevation areas, urging hikers to be adequately prepared.
Local authorities have reached out to the community, encouraging anyone who might have been hiking in Desolation Wilderness during that time to assist in the search. They have asked anyone who may have seen Coughran or has any information about his whereabouts to contact them at 530-621-6600 or 530-573-3051.
The disappearance of Jason Coughran has raised concern among both family and friends, as well as the hiking community. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office continues to stress the importance of preparedness when venturing into wilderness areas, to ensure the safety of all outdoor enthusiasts.
As the search efforts persist, the support of local hikers and residents becomes increasingly vital in the quest to locate the missing man. Efforts are being coordinated with various agencies to cover more ground and increase the chances of a successful recovery.
The case has captured local and national attention, highlighting both the appeal of California’s natural landscapes and the risks associated with hiking in isolated areas. The community remains hopeful that Coughran will be found safe and sound.
