Queen Latifah made a remarkable return to the American Music Awards (AMAs) during the 52nd edition of the event, held on May 25, 2026. The 56-year-old musician and actress not only hosted the evening but also turned it into a delightful family occasion, inviting her partner Eboni Nichols and their six-year-old son, Rebel, to join her on the red carpet.

Dressed in a chic, fluffy ivory coat complete with a wide white belt, Latifah showcased her signature style. She opted for a sleek ponytail and added a vibrant fuchsia lipstick as a striking accent. Her partner, Nichols, 48, complemented her look in a dark green dress with elegant boning that featured tasteful thigh cutouts, and she accessorised with tasteful gold and pearl jewellery. Young Rebel was dressed to impress in a charming ensemble that included a black suit with shorts, a white collared shirt, knee-high black socks, and loafers.
This year’s AMAs marked a significant occasion for Latifah, as it was her first time hosting the show as a sole emcee since her initial appearance back in 1995, when she shared the stage with legends Tom Jones and Lorrie Morgan. Latifah also brings to the stage her past experience, having performed at the awards in 2008 alongside Alicia Keys and Kathleen Battle.
In the lead-up to the awards ceremony, Latifah expressed a mix of nerves and excitement in an interview with PEOPLE. “I know it’s going to be great just because of the people that are performing and that this is a fan-favourite show,” she remarked. The awards are unique in that fans have a say in both the performers and the winners, a dynamic that she embraced. “This is always something that really comes back to the people, and I’m going to make sure that the people feel good about what they’re seeing and hearing,” she added.
Latifah is not new to hosting major events; her portfolio includes the 2005 Grammys, the 2010 BET Awards, the 2023-24 NAACP Image Awards, and the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors. Impressively, she stands as the first individual to take on the role of solo host for both the Grammys and the AMAs.
In a conversation with Billboard, she shared her insights on the unpredictability of live hosting. “You have to allow for a certain amount of spontaneity, because it’s live and you don’t know what might happen. So you sort of have to feel comfortable at the helm,” she advised. According to Latifah, hosts should make the show their own to ensure a natural flow during the event.
The lineup for this year’s performances included star artists like Keith Urban, BTS, Teddy Swims, and Billy Idol, promising an exciting evening for music fans. The anticipation surrounding the AMAs was palpable, especially as CBS and Dick Clark Productions announced Latifah’s hosting role earlier in April.
“I can’t wait to get to Vegas, and read through this whole script, and look at the run-throughs of everybody practicing for this big moment,” Latifah stated in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. The excitement surrounding the event was highly evident, reflecting the anticipation within the music community.
The nominations for the 2026 AMAs were unveiled on April 14, with pop sensation Taylor Swift leading the pack with a total of eight nominations. Should she clinch all eight, she would notably tie with music legends Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston for the most wins in a single night. Other strong contenders included Sabrina Carpenter, Morgan Wallen, and first-time nominees Olivia Dean and Sombr, each nominated for seven awards.
The 52nd American Music Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah, aired live on CBS and was available for streaming via Paramount+ Premium from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. As a celebration of musical talent, the event attracted viewers and fans alike, all eager to see who would take home the coveted awards.
