Search Efforts Underway After Young Hiker Goes Missing in Illinois

A search is ongoing in Illinois after a young man was reported missing while hiking in the Little Grand Canyon Recreation Area. Kameron Strabley, a 22-year-old from Carbondale, was last observed on May 16, when he became separated from a friend during their hike.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Strabley was reported missing at around 3:22 PM local time. Authorities noted that as daylight waned, search efforts were hampered. The search crew utilised both personnel and drones to comb the area until around 11 PM, when the conditions became unsafe for continued efforts.

Unfortunately, just a few days later, on May 19, authorities announced that human remains were discovered in the Big Muddy River, which flows parallel to the Little Grand Canyon. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stated that the body found aligns with the description of Strabley. While pending confirmation from the coroner’s office through an autopsy, the search has shifted from locating a missing person to a grim investigation.

Initial reports indicated that Strabley, who was dressed in a blue shirt, blue jeans, and boots at the time of his disappearance, may have encountered difficulties while navigating the terrain. Search teams have expressed their grief over the situation and are working diligently to provide answers to his loved ones.

Strabley also recently celebrated his graduation from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. His family noted that he possessed an adventurous spirit, keen to explore the outdoors and engage in activities like hiking and introductory rock climbing. His thirst for travel was also mentioned; he had a strong desire to embrace various cultures and create lasting memories through exploration.
