Shannon Garvey has recently unveiled her debut novel, ‘June Baby’, under the Thousand Voices publishing imprint championed by Jenna Bush Hager. The book is now available through Random House and dives deep into themes surrounding motherhood, mentorship, and the journey of self-discovery, all set against the vibrant summer backdrop of Block Island.

Garvey, raised in Rhode Island, has always had a love for books and the beach. Describing herself as embodying a “coastal New England summer,” she reflects on her childhood memories of playing in the sand and her early job as a lifeguard. At just 30 years old, Garvey now celebrates a pivotal moment in her life, fulfilling a long-held dream of becoming a published author.

In ‘June Baby’, readers are introduced to Ruth, a character navigating the complexities of love, loss, and personal growth over the course of a summer. While Ruth is not a direct reflection of Garvey, the author admits that there are significant parallels between the two. “She’s someone who has been told she possesses talent and passion but struggles with self-belief,” Garvey remarked, highlighting the internal conflicts that many individuals, including herself, often face.
At the heart of ‘June Baby’ is the theme of motherhood, a subject that resonates deeply with Garvey due to her own familial experiences. When her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 28, Garvey knew she wanted to infuse aspects of this journey into her work. “My mother and I share a close bond, and when I created Ruth, I understood that her deep pain stemmed from losing her mother to breast cancer,” stated Garvey.
The complexity of this relationship made it challenging for Garvey to explore the topic in her writing. “While I’m incredibly grateful that my mother’s story took a positive turn, thinking about losing her was daunting,” she confessed. This emotional depth ultimately served the narrative, allowing for a poignant examination of the ties that bind mothers and daughters.
Garvey’s insights into human emotion and connection enable her to create realistic characters that resonate with readers. Reflecting on her writing process, she emphasised the importance of empathy in crafting the first draft. “A significant part of being an author involves understanding how characters might react in various situations and exploring their inner thoughts and feelings,” she noted.
Her journey received a unique boost when she connected with Jenna Bush Hager. Prior to their meeting, Garvey had consciously avoided delving into statistics or information that could amplify her nerves regarding Bush Hager’s successful career as a literary figure. However, after the call, Garvey felt a sense of accomplishment and relief, despite the initial jitters she experienced. “I was both delighted and a bit embarrassed at how overwhelmed I was when I later realised the extent of her accomplishments in the literary world,” she laughed.
As Garvey embarks on this exciting new chapter of her life, she hopes to inspire others through her storytelling. ‘June Baby’ illustrates not only the intricacies of familial relationships but also the challenges of understanding and realising one’s potential.
With the release of ‘June Baby’, Shannon Garvey not only achieves her childhood dream but also invites readers to reflect on love, loss, and self-discovery amid the enchanting setting of Block Island. The novel can now be found in bookstores and online, marking a significant milestone in Garvey’s evolving literary journey.
