Gromit, the beloved canine companion from the renowned *Wallace & Gromit* franchise, is set to share his life story in an autobiographical memoir titled *Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit*. The book will be available to the public from 27 October, courtesy of Penguin Random House’s Penguin Press.

Created by Oscar-winning artist Nick Park, Gromit has charmed audiences since his debut in the 1989 short film *A Grand Day Out*. In his new memoir, the intelligent dog reminisces about his life with his eccentric owner, Wallace, providing fans with a unique insight into their adventures and misadventures over the years.
Nick Park expressed his enthusiasm for Gromit’s literary debut, saying, “I’m very excited to announce that Wallace’s faithful — and rather more intelligent — pooch has decided to break silence, put pen to paper, and share with the world some of his innermost thoughts and feelings.” He added, “The book is a right riveting read.”
In an exclusive excerpt shared with the media, Gromit contemplates the joys and quirks of dog ownership. He reflects on the essential roles that humans play in a dog’s life, suggesting that the bond between dogs and their owners is built on a mutual need for companionship and distraction. Gromit notes, “Just look at us as a species and — by and large — you’ll see a bunch of lovable goons always shooting off after bees, leaves and sudden smells.”
The memoir navigates the early days of Gromit’s life with Wallace, presenting humorous anecdotes about their evolving relationship. For instance, Gromit recounts the chaotic moments of their first encounters, including Wallace’s clumsiness as he adjusted to life as an inventor and pet owner. “He was always tripping over me,” Gromit recalls, noting how he perfected his tea-making skills in response to Wallace’s frequent falls with trays.
As Gromit and Wallace settle into their routine, they both discover new facets of their lives together. Gromit discusses the transition from life in a kennel to a comfortable room in Wallace’s home, describing the decorating process and the companionship that followed. It was during this period that Gromit reveals his struggle with identity, specifically his name.
The search for the right name yields some amusing suggestions from Wallace, ranging from “Spot” to “Prince,” none of which seem to fit. Their journey to discover Gromit’s true name ultimately leads to a creative and heartfelt exchange over a shared love of cheese. It is here, while enjoying crackers, that Wallace triumphantly proposes the name “Wensleydale.” However, recognising the possible confusion, he ultimately settles on the name that fans around the world know him by today: Gromit.
*Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit* is filled with entertaining reflections that highlight the bond between a dog and his owner, marked by loyalty, friendship, and the simple pleasures of daily life. Gromit’s narrative offers readers a delightful glimpse into a world that is as whimsical as it is heartfelt, capturing the essence of the much-loved characters created by Park and Aardman Animations.
As excitement builds around the release, fans of the franchise are encouraged to pre-order their copies to ensure they do not miss out on this special collection of stories and insights. With Gromit’s distinctive voice and Park’s creative storytelling, *Grand* promises to be an engaging exploration of companionship in the form of a canine autobiography.
*Grand: The Autobiography of Gromit* is set to hit shelves on 27 October, and it will be available from various retailers. As anticipation grows, readers are reminded that they can look forward to a tale that encapsulates the playful spirit and deep bond that has endeared Gromit to fans for decades.
