In a tale of resilience and hope, Tremaine “TJ” Richmond, an 18-year-old from Bossier City, Louisiana, recently overcame a near-fatal health crisis that left him with end-stage heart failure. His journey began just weeks after participating in a high school basketball game on Valentine’s Day in 2025, showcasing the stark reality that life can change dramatically in an instant.

TJ was celebrating his team’s victory when he began experiencing troubling symptoms the following day. He reported a constricted feeling in his chest and difficulty breathing to his mother, Charissa Richmond. Concerned about her son’s health, Charissa sought answers and took TJ to visit four different doctors within the week, but doctors attributed his symptoms to bronchitis and prescribed medication for a cough, which yielded no improvement.
On March 8, 2025, with TJ’s condition worsening, his grandmother took him to the emergency department of Willis Knighton Health. The family was devastated to learn that TJ was suffering from end-stage congestive heart failure. “It was really scary,” TJ recalled, admitting to the fear and depression he felt at the prospect of his health deteriorating further.
As TJ’s condition declined, Charissa was at home gathering a change of clothes when she received a life-altering call from her husband, Tremaine Richmond Sr. TJ had gone into cardiac arrest. “His body just shut down,” Charissa said, reflecting on the harrowing moment. Medical staff acted swiftly, employing a LUCAS chest compression machine for CPR while they awaited the arrival of Dr. Ahmed Virani, a pulmonary critical care physician, who rushed to the hospital to oversee the resuscitation efforts.
After continuing CPR for over 120 minutes, Dr. Virani faced the difficult decision of whether to escalate support for TJ, knowing that survival chances diminished after extended periods of cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, he proceeded to prepare TJ for ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a life support system designed to provide the heart and lungs with time to heal.
“I just didn’t want to give up,” Dr. Virani stated, compelled to try every possible option. “This young man essentially died and was brought back to life,” noted Dr. Joseph Spinner, the medical director of Heart Transplantation at Texas Children’s Hospital, where TJ was later airlifted for further treatment.
Genetic testing revealed that TJ faced an increased risk of developing cardiomyopathy due to a mutation he was born with. On April 21, 2025, surgeons implanted a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) to assist his heart, allowing him to leave the hospital and participate in his high school graduation the following month.
Unfortunately, his health took another downturn in July due to an infection, and he was placed on the heart transplant list while spending the following months at the hospital. “The nurses and the doctors helped me through it,” he shared, expressing gratitude for their compassion.
Finally, on January 24, 2026, he received the long-awaited call that a suitable heart was available. Joyous and grateful, TJ reflected on how his faith sustained him throughout his ordeal. Charissa also expressed her overwhelming joy as a mother welcoming her son into a new chapter of life. “It took me back to when I birthed him. He’s getting a new lease on life,” she said.
After several weeks recovering from transplant surgery, TJ made it back home, filled with hope despite missing his freshman year of college. He plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy, aiming to work for the NBA, inspired by his own experience.
Motivated by his incredible journey, TJ and his mother are now advocates for organ donation. Charissa, a registered organ donor, believes in its transformative power. “You’re helping so many people as an organ donor. You never know when someone will need a heart,” she implored. Her encouragement to families grappling with serious health issues is to remain positive and hold onto hope, even in the darkest times.
Through their story, the Richmonds highlight not only the importance of organ donations but also the strength of family, faith, and perseverance against life’s toughest challenges. Their message serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar battles, reminding everyone to never give up.
