**Farewell to ‘The Neighborhood’: CBS Comedy Concludes After Eight Seasons**
The beloved comedy series ‘The Neighborhood’ has officially ended following its eighth season, which wrapped up on 11 May. Fans will now have to say their goodbyes to the show that introduced viewers to the intriguing dynamics between a Midwestern family and their predominantly Black neighbours in Los Angeles. The series starred Max Greenfield as Dave Johnson, with Cedric the Entertainer portraying his neighbour Calvin Butler, against a backdrop of comedic and often poignant explorations of race and class.

‘The Neighborhood’ became a mainstay of CBS’s comedy lineup, delving into complex societal themes wrapped in humour. The premise — of a White family moving into a historically Black neighbourhood — tackled the nuances of gentrification and community with both heart and levity. This delicate balance allowed the show to resonate with a wide audience over its eight-year run.

As the series came to a close, Cedric the Entertainer provided insight into the show’s legacy. Speaking to The Knockturnal in October 2025, he highlighted how the show’s premise addressed the ongoing conversation about gentrification and its impacts on established communities. He noted, “We started off with a premise that was, especially at that time, this idea of gentrification that our Black neighborhoods were starting to be taken back over by people that are moving in….”
In March 2025, CBS confirmed the renewal of ‘The Neighborhood’ for its final season, with Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, asserting that loyal fans deserved a “proper farewell.” However, the decision to conclude the series was not solely based on artistic direction. Cedric revealed in an interview with The Breakfast Club that financial considerations played a crucial role. He explained that rising production costs and demands for salary increases among the cast led to the conclusion that the show was approaching its end.
The actor remarked, “After eight seasons, everybody needed raises and that’s when you knew, ‘Alright this show is getting ready to be done.’” Cedric emphasised the importance of ensuring that all cast members benefitted, stating, “You want everybody to eat with you… I’m not getting ready to be that guy where I’m just the only one eating.” Such sentiments illustrate the camaraderie and mutual respect among the show’s cast.
Reflecting on her experience, Beth Behrs, who played Gemma Johnson, shared an emotional tribute on social media after filming concluded. She described her journey through various life experiences depicted in the series, including marriage and parenthood, as “an absolute gift,” echoing the show’s impact on its cast and audience alike.
As the curtain fell on ‘The Neighborhood,’ talk of potential spinoffs emerged. Although two were in development, only one materialised into a series. ‘Crutch,’ featuring Tracy Morgan as Calvin’s cousin, follows a Harlem shop owner whose life is turned upside down when his children move back home. The show premiered on Paramount+ in November 2025. Unfortunately, plans for a spinoff focusing on other characters from ‘The Neighborhood’ were scrapped due to budgetary constraints.
In discussing the scrapped plans, Cedric expressed disappointment, stating, “We were excited about doing this… We thought we did a great job, but ultimately there wasn’t enough room in the budget for what we had.” As it stands, ‘Crutch’ has yet to receive a renewal for a second season.
For those eager to revisit the heartfelt moments and humorous interactions that defined ‘The Neighborhood,’ all eight seasons are now available for streaming on Paramount+. The series leaves behind a cherished legacy, showcasing the complexities of community and connection in a diverse society.
As we bid farewell to ‘The Neighborhood,’ it’s clear that the show has left an indelible mark on audiences, prompting reflections on the intersection of culture, race, and humour in everyday life. As cast members embark on new creative ventures, fans can look back at the series as a meaningful exploration of what it means to belong.
