According to the death certificate, which was reported by Us Weekly, the immediate causes of Mackie’s passing were identified as a subarachnoid haemorrhage and blunt head trauma. It was noted that he experienced the fall at the home of his long-time design director, Joseph McFate, on 11 September. After the fall, Mackie was hospitalised at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he ultimately passed away.

Mackie’s representative provided additional context, confirming that he had been residing at McFate’s guest house in the days leading up to his death. The rep clarified that he had been suffering from pneumonia both prior to and following his hospitalisation. “A healthcare professional was with him when he fell,” they stated, underscoring the severity of Mackie’s condition leading up to his passing.
The news of Mackie’s death was shared with sorrow on the designer’s official Instagram account. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today,” the post read, accompanied by a touching photograph of the designer. His team commemorated his legacy, stating, “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.”
Bob Mackie became synonymous with iconic fashion statements, most notably for his long-standing collaborations with the pop diva Cher. However, his impressive portfolio also includes work for numerous other stars, including Carol Burnett, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli. In recent years, he expanded his reach to newer talents such as Sabrina Carpenter and Miley Cyrus, continuing to inspire through his creations.
An accomplished artist, Mackie was nominated for 32 Emmy Awards and won nine, primarily for his work with Cher, Diana Ross, and Carol Burnett. Additionally, he received three Academy Award nominations for his contributions to films including “Lady Sings the Blues” and “Funny Lady.” His talents were further acknowledged in 2002 when he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and in 2019, he received a Tony Award for “The Cher Show,” a tribute to Cher’s life and career which featured a fictional version of Mackie himself.
Reflecting on his passion for design, Mackie once told PEOPLE, “I always knew what I wanted to do.” He reminisced about his childhood gifts that shaped his artistic journey, noting with a hint of humour that he knew he was destined for a creative career when he received a jewellery-making kit for Christmas.
Bob Mackie’s legacy is carried on by his granddaughter, Alyssa Townsend, as well as his great-granddaughters, Kyla and Keira Townsend, and his former wife, Lulu Porter. His extraordinary designs, which have left an indelible mark on pop culture, will be remembered and celebrated for years to come, embodying the beauty and creativity that Mackie infused into the world of fashion.
