A severely malnourished Cane Corso mix, affectionately named Balboa, is receiving vital care from the MSPCA-Angell after being rescued in a critical state. The dog was discovered by Boston Animal Control and brought to the Angell Animal Medical Center on April 22. Experts have voiced their relief that he was found when he was, as Balboa’s health was deteriorating rapidly.

Upon arrival at the medical centre, Balboa was visibly weakened, with his ribs and hip bones protruding alarmingly. He was noted to have a dangerously low body temperature of just 94.4 degrees Fahrenheit, well below the average range of 101 to 102.5 degrees for healthy dogs. Dr. Emily Hussey of the MSPCA-Angell detailed the immediate concerns for Balboa’s wellbeing: “When Balboa first arrived at our emergency room, our priority was stabilising him.”
Mike Keiley, Vice President of Animal Protection at MSPCA-Angell, echoed the urgency surrounding Balboa’s care. “Fortuitously, Balboa came to us when he did. Our veterinary team initiated stabilisation efforts by providing warmth and supportive care,” Keiley stated. He expressed gratitude for being able to both focus on Balboa’s recovery and investigate the circumstances that led to his current condition.
The MSPCA-Angell is actively collaborating with Boston Animal Control to uncover the backstory of Balboa’s plight, as many questions remain unanswered. Keiley suggested that the dog may have come from a home where the owner was struggling to provide adequate care. “It’s possible his owner was having difficulties,” he remarked, highlighting the need for understanding the factors leading to his distress.
Balboa has since been transferred from the medical centre to the MSPCA-Angell adoption centre, where caretakers are committed to helping him regain his strength. Keiley noted that reintroducing food to Balboa’s diet will be a gradual process to avoid the risk of refeeding syndrome, a potentially serious condition that can occur in severely malnourished animals. “Getting Balboa back to a healthy weight will take time, and while he is very food-motivated, we must proceed with caution,” he added.
Before Balboa can be considered for adoption, he will be placed in foster care. This period will allow staff to monitor his personality in a home environment, enabling them to better understand his characteristics and needs as he recovers. Once he achieves a healthier body condition, he will be neutered and prepared for adoption.

The MSPCA-Angell is also welcoming donations specifically aimed at supporting Balboa through their website. While the dog is not currently available for adoption, his journey to recovery is ongoing, and he is expected to enter foster care soon. Once his condition improves, he will be ready for his forever home.
