In an inspiring turn of events, Kayla McClellan, a 32-year-old educator from Missouri, has returned to her roots, teaching at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy Middle School—the very institution from which she was expelled years ago. McClellan’s early school experience was far from exemplary. Reflecting on her time as a student, she notes, “I was at school for a good time, not a long time,” admitting that her focus was on socialising rather than academics. By the time she reached eighth grade, her lack of motivation culminated in poor behaviour and grades, leading to her expulsion from Lincoln College Preparatory Academy.

After leaving Lincoln, McClellan transferred to a local charter school, where she successfully graduated despite facing numerous challenges. She describes herself as “very smart,” yet acknowledges a reluctance to engage fully in her studies. “I just didn’t see myself as an academic,” she explained, a sentiment that resonates with many students who struggle to find their footing in the educational system.
Encouragement from family and supportive teachers played a crucial role in her transformation. When it was time to apply for university, McClellan’s mother urged her to make the most of the opportunity. “This is your last chance, so make it count,” she recalls her mother telling her. Heeding this advice, McClellan enrolled at Grambling State University in Louisiana, where she became part of the cheerleading team. This new environment, combined with invested teachers, made a significant difference in her perspective. “It just changed the trajectory of my life,” she recalled.

After earning her degree in 2015, McClellan pursued further studies, obtaining two graduate degrees in history from Mississippi State University. Still uncertain about her career path, she turned to her older sister for guidance. Her sister, active in Teach for America, inspired McClellan to follow a similar route. This decision led her back to her hometown in Kansas City and ultimately to apply for a teaching position at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy.
In 2020, she was offered a role at the middle school, where she not only taught but also coached cheerleading and track. McClellan emphasises that her return is not about seeking redemption for her past but rather about ensuring her students feel valued and understood. “Over time, you start to see the kind of person you’re talking to,” she explained, highlighting her investment in the individuality of her students.
An illustrative moment that stands out in McClellan’s teaching career involves a student named Layla, who initially displayed challenging behaviour. Recognising Layla’s potential as an athlete, McClellan approached her with support rather than criticism. “After one of her races, I just ran up to her and hugged her,” she recalls, noting that this gesture left a lasting impression on Layla.
In 2023, McClellan transitioned to Lincoln College Preparatory Academy High School, where she teaches American history and serves as the athletic director. Layla, now a 10th grader, visits McClellan’s office each day, representing the positive impact that encouragement can have on a young person’s life. “It’s all about the small bounds forward,” McClellan says, reiterating her belief that students like Layla need affirmation and support rather than criticism.
