Edwards has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that he has “done nothing wrong” and has “no reason to resign.” In a statement to The Assembly, a North Carolina news outlet, he described the allegations as “horseshit,” stating that he prefers not to discuss such matters in what he referred to as “trashy tabloids.” He highlighted that he has never been involved in any romantic relationships with staff members.
The House Ethics Committee’s increasing activity in recent months has been underscored by the recent resignations of two Congress members. Texas Representative Tony Gonzales stepped down following a scandal in which a former staffer tragically died after an alleged affair, while California Representative Eric Swalwell left the gubernatorial race amid accusations of sexual misconduct with staff. In April, Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick also resigned after being found guilty of multiple counts related to federal criminal charges concerning pandemic aid funds.
While Edwards welcomed the investigation, he suggested that the current political climate has led to opportunistic allegations designed to stir controversy. “Given the current political environment, it comes as no surprise that others with their own agendas raise false accusations to create news,” he stated in comments made to PEOPLE. His office has not confirmed whether the Ethics Committee has reached out to him or provided any details regarding the ongoing inquiry.
Reports by Axios detail that Edwards allegedly exhibited inappropriate behaviour towards two younger female staffers, reportedly breaching professional boundaries and fostering an uncomfortable work environment. The allegations indicate that Edwards gifted one staffer jewellery and a custom puzzle depicting actor Adam Sandler, even inviting her to a Sandler comedy show. Another young employee was purportedly given a designer handbag.
Additionally, Edwards allegedly took a trip to Las Vegas for a holiday at the Bellagio hotel in November 2025, accompanied by the staff member to whom he had earlier penned the letter. It is noteworthy that the woman no longer worked for his office at that time. The letter, described as heartfelt, began with the phrase, “You are the most amazing woman,” and included expressions of joy regarding their time together both at work and outside of it.
The Republican’s campaign has publicly dismissed these allegations as baseless, suggesting that they are motivated by individuals aiming to settle political scores. Greg Beam, the Henderson County GOP Chair, defended Edwards in a newsletter, arguing that the accusations are absurd and lack credibility.
Since taking office in 2022, Edwards has represented a district that includes Asheville, having previously served in the North Carolina state Senate. He is seen as having a stronghold in his district, which is regarded as a secure seat for Republican candidates, as noted by the Cook Political Report.
As the investigation unfolds, the House Ethics Committee has refrained from commenting further, adhering to its policy of remaining silent until official announcements concerning inquiries are made.
